Minimalistic tax software suggestions?
« on: February 19, 2014, 06:04:01 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking for minimalistic tax software that is free or very low cost.

I already know all of the numbers and understand where to put them all, I just want something that will let me type the numbers in on the forms and then have it do the proper addition, subtraction, and copying numbers from, for example, the bottom of Schedule A back to Form 1040.

I don't want the interview thing where it asks me all the questions...Did you have a baby?  Did you refinance your mortgage?  Did you give to charity? etc.

I don't need e-file.  I'm happy to print and paper file.

State isn't really necessary; I can do that by hand in about 10 minutes after I finish my federal return.

I'll have a 1040, Schedule A, and Schedule D, so nothing complex.

Any suggestions?

Free File Fillable Forms sounds like basically what you're looking for. It lets you type in the relevant numbers and does the easy calculations (you have to do some of the stuff like calculating the tax amount yourself). It lets you e-file for free at the end, saving yourself a stamp and expediting your refund (if any).
