Reasonably priced patio furniture?
« on: March 11, 2021, 04:49:26 PM »
I'm redoing my patio, and need to get patio furniture.  I'm very flexible on style and would prefer to buy something used, but Craig's list isn't showing much in my area.  Does anyone have recommendations for other places to look?  I'm not on Facebook at all - is the Facebook marketplace a good option?

Ideally I'd like to get comfortable seating for 4 people plus a separate small dining table and chairs, also for 4.  We have other couples over sometimes, but almost never more than 4 people total.  Do places like Goodwill have patio furniture?  Any other options I'm missing?

Depending on where you live, it might be too early for people to sell patio stuff on Craigslist.  Maybe wait until the spendypants start buying new in early summer and want to get rid of the old stuff.  You could try putting up a wanted ad on CL right now.

I am looking at buying some new Adirondack chairs from LL Bean. They are expensive--about 400$ each, including cushion--but seem to get excellent reviews. I am generally pretty happy with the quality of their clothes and other things I have bought in the past. Hopefully, at this price point, they would last a decade or longer.

Anyone know anything about these? https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/116773?page=all-weather-adirondack-chair-square-back&bc=31-132-515463&feat=515463-GN2&csp=a&pos=5

When I just clicked, they were listed at $300 each, which is probably $280 more than I would ever want to spend on a wooden folding chair.  At that price point, I'd hope they have a weatherproof back massager built in.

I agree, you're looking too early.  Used furniture should be popping up when people buy new stuff from the Memorial Day weekend sales.

This early in the season you're at the mercy of hoping someone buys new.  But it also comes with the caveat that it might not be in good condition or good quality.  We've taken to waiting til the end of the season for items to buy on steep discounts.  This also helps us get past the initial urge phase and often we decide even cheap it's not needed.  Example, last year got 6 patio chairs with cushions new for $35 each I think.

In my area, classic honeycomb metal patio sets for 4 go for &125 -$165 used. Get the old stuff, it is heavy and better quality than the recently made-in-China stuff. It can be repainted with spray paint every few years and it lasts forever.

I know you said there’s not much on craigslist. Keep looking on craigslist every day and make an offer when you see a set immediately because these things go quickly.

I am really high on these classic honeycomb sets because they last for decades. I have seen them painted in bright colors and that’s fun too. But classic black or classic white is, well, classic.

I have heard because of Covid, people are spending money doing up their backyards instead of spending on travel and going out, and it seems to be true. Lots of outdoor furniture that I like is sold out and back ordered. In 2017 I bought the resin wicker chairs from World Market. They are cute and comfortable, and on sale I think they were $50 or $60 each. But this year they are starting to fall apart. They are still sturdy, but the little strips are falling off and coming unwound. So I am replacing them with teak chairs. They are expensive, but beautiful and will last forever. I keep them out all year, but under a covered patio. I ordered the first two about a month ago thinking I would get another two after I make sure they are comfortable and exactly what I want. Well, now they are out of stock! Dang it. I am on the mailing list, so hopefully I can get two more soon.

A few years ago, Ikea had some dirt cheap outdoor dining furniture. Little folding table & chairs with wood slats over metal. My SO and I each independently bought a set, so now we have seating for 4. The wood has aged over time, but so far they've held up pretty well (we put them away in the winter).

Here's a link to the current version. (IIRC it was cheaper when I bought, oh well)

You may want to try Facebook marketplace or Nextdoor. Around us, people are redoing their backyards and selling their "old" patio sets for practically nothing.

Try your local thrift stores. I occasionally see patio furniture at my favorite thrift store.

Adirondack chairs in general are BIG and HEAVY.  Not something to buy if you want to be able to scoot them around as needed.  Also, they tend not be good for shorter people, because they're deep in the seat.  And the seat slopes backward so not the easiest to get out of.  But if they'll be seating tall, limber people, they should be fine!  Definitely classic and long lasting.

They are just uncomfortable.

They are high on style and low on practicality.

FB marketplace where I live (outskirts of a very large city) is very good, especially if you don't much care about style and color.  But even if you do, stalking it (checking daily, or even several times a day) can turn up very good deals.  You do need to be able to pick it up, which is one sticking point for me a I'm preparing to shop for several items.  There is service associated with marketplace that will do pick up of some items for a fee.

When we first bought our house in 2018, we weren't sure how much time we would spend outside. We aren't be nature lounge-on-the-patio types. Pre-pandemic, if we were outside, it was usually to work in the garden or to have breakfast or a drink on the deck. We spend more time there now, at least in good weather (we're in Toronto).

We decided to start with some Ikea pieces from their very affordable APPLARO series, which are stained Acacia wood. We got the gateleg table and a pair of folding bistro chairs on sale (total CAD $169) plus seat cushions. These fit well on our fairly narrow upper deck (and also served as our dining room table and chairs when we moved into the unfurnished basement of the house, pending renovation of the upstairs bathrooms).

A few months later, we added outdoor storage bench (CAD $99), which works great for extra seating (or as a coffee table). My dad's Christmas 2020 gift to us was some $ to add a little more furniture to the deck, so we are going to get a pair of armchairs (CAD $80 each) (also suitable for dining but a little more comfortable than the bistro chairs), a bench with back rest (CAD $125), and a pair of small folding tables that also function as stools (CAD $20 each), and some cushions. That gives us two socially distanced seating areas. We like the versatility of the pieces and the fact that many of them fold up to take up very little space. They've handled the weather fairly well but the older pieces will need some touching up this year. (Ikea sells the touch-up varnish, too.)

Thanks for the comments on Adirondack Chairs. I do really like the look, but I've never sat in one for very long. I am fairly tall (6') and in very good shape, but maybe I should look at something else. I am looking for something a bit more relaxed than a work/desk chair, but not quite so chill as a lounge chair (don't want to immediately fall asleep)...

In summer, I like to sit in my chair next to my wife, drink a beer, read a book, and watch the clouds drift by. The chairs we have now were wire frame with cushion, bought at Target about 10 years ago. Decent and fairly comfortable, but they have seen better days! And, I spend enough time out there in summer, I think new chairs would be money well spent.

Can you recommend some good brands that would look good, be very comfortable, and last a long time (keeping in mind that I HATE wicker)?

Thanks
