Best places to buy dried fruit in bulk?
« on: July 21, 2015, 06:06:54 PM »
We've been enjoying dried fruit, but at Sam's it was $9 for a 2.75 pound bag that contained a lot of raisins/etc.

Mainly we like the pineapple and mangos, but this is a small percentage of the bag and raisins are much cheaper.

Where are cost effective places to buy dried fruit?

From searching around it looks like nuts.com or ohnuts.com have pineapple ~$4/pound.

You could go a DIY route - drying fruit out isn't too hard, even if you don't have a dehydrator.

I haven't experimented too much with this, but I got some delicious dried apply by just peeling and slicing apples that were about to go bad and drying them out in the oven at a lowish temp. http://www.wikihow.com/Make-Dried-Fruit You're limited in how much you can make at a time (number of baking trays/oven space), though. Also not sure about the price comparison vs. store-bought dried fruit. If you get the fresh fruit on sale, you probably come out ahead for most things besides raisins. You could also ensure your preferred distribution of fruit.
