So I think I'm finally ready to have my husband take over cutting my hair. I usually only get 2-3 haircuts a year, but I keep it long so I'm hoping it won't be too difficult for him to DIY.

I have long hair that is really wavy, and I wear it natural so the stylist gives me plenty of layers. What are the best tutorials for cutting long, wavy hair with layers? . Help me up my mustachian game!

I have long wavy hair too and I have my husband cut straight across the bottom for me and I do the layers. If you look on YouTube there are plenty of videos on cutting layers. I do the one where I pull my hair in a ponytail all in front (like a unicorn) and cut. I save so much money this way and it honestly looks just like I paid a lot to have it cut.

Well, I did it. I used the ponytail method and I cut my own hair. I have to say that I don't love how choppy the layers are... But, I trimmed up the bottom a few inches after I finished with the ponytail cut, and it is better. I felt pretty badass :)

I've heard you can also hang upside down and have someone cut straight across, and it'll be layered when you right yourself.  Never tried it myself, but maybe you can try that method next time ;-)

I did not see this before but it sounds like your first experience was not too bad. It gets better with practice!

You actually don't need another person; I do mine myself. I also do it outdoors (nice in the spring, birds can make nests with your hair).

I have long wavy, thick hair so I straighten it before I cut it. Cutting wet hair is risky for me so I like to do it dry.

Tools: Only one! Hair shears. You absolutely need hair cutting scissors, everything else will hack up your hair. They are inexpensive and last forever.

I also use a table mirror since I'm doing it outside.

Bring all the hair to the front, evenly parted down the middle.

Cut as much as you want, in a straight line. For thick hair it helps to divide hair into more sections (2-3 per side). You are now finished!

For layers, I just divide my hair into sections and cut at an angle. This graphic helps some although I do not do all of the steps. :)

Ha! No one at work said anything, so hopefully it wasn't that bad :)

Actually, after trimming up the bottom so I had a thicker bottom layer, and refining some of the layers, I think it turned out rather nice.  So it wasn't so easy as doing the unicorn ponytail, but it probably still only took about 15 minutes total and turned out pretty good!

This is helpful! I was actually thinking next time I'll probably leave the bottom half of my hair down and trim the ends, then try the ponytil method with just the top portion. This looks like a great alternative (or addition) for getting the layers right.
