What Percent Will You Make Toward Your FI Goal This Year?
« on: November 22, 2015, 11:52:13 AM »
I was wondering if people track how much they progress toward their overall goal annually.  If so, how much do you expect to advance the football this year?  Do you consider that a successful year?

Looking at my newly-created sheet if I keep my goal level going forward I expect for us to make it approximately 8% of the way to our goal this year.   Assuming a similar environment (which won't happen) it appears that something between 6 and 8 percent per year is pretty doable based on my track record.  That puts us roughly 6-8 years from our overall goal given where we currently are.  If next year goes as expected I hope to make it north of 16% of the way toward my overall goal in what should be our best year to date.

I know that there are things you can't control in the market, but what do you feel is a successful year for this metric?

I am aiming for 300k euros (plus money in a pension plan), and then I can call myself FI.

I had 62.5k at the beginning of the year, so at that point I still needed 237.5k. By the end of 2015, I'll probably have added 22.5k to my stash (still depending on December's income and the stock market too), so 22.5k/237k is almost ten percent of progress.

I'm pretty happy about it; I could have done better, but I also could have done a lot worse.

15% this year, thought we may FIRE on less than I originally intended, since I think my original goal is more conservative than it really needs to be. If we FIRE with the amount that the statistics say we're fine with (4% SWR, etc, etc), we've added about 19% this year. This year was a pretty standard year so assuming I don't pull the trigger next summer like my signature block shows, we'd add another 15% to my original goal, and we'll have surpassed the lower goal already.

My net worth will increase about $65,000 this year but due to ridiculous level of student loan debt my 401k plus home equity plus savings will increase only about $25,000.  Sad to think that I only put myself 3% or so closer to fire but in 2.5 years if my loans are paid off I should be able to get 7-8% closer to fire per year plus any gains in the stock market.

I'm part of a throwdown group aiming for at least 50% savings rate for the year (sure, not the exact metric you're looking for, but similar). I believe I will end the year at a savings rate of about 70%. This brings me about 12% closer to retirement (and into the high 90's).

Interesting concept, I'm sure my "number" will change many times over before I actually hit it. But assuming $1m, I am 6% closer to this goal. The best part is that my NW is up ~80% ytd due to amazing increase in income and subsequently a huge bump in savings rate.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
