I am currently a W-2 employee but my job situation is becoming untenable and I would like to leave by the end of the year. Initially I wanted to stay long enough in 2019 to max out my 401k (which would take close to 3 months), but I'm starting to think I can't last that long. Are there any other options to contribute to a tax-deferred retirement vehicle while not working? My husband is a W-2 employee and has a much higher income than me, so we would not qualify for anything that has an income limit. I've looked into the spousal IRA but from what I've found there seems to be an income limit if the working spouse participates in a 401K (but no income limits if neither spouse participates in a 401K). I may do some contract work in 2019 in which case I'll open a SEP IRA, but I want to keep my options as open as possible (W2 work, 1099 work, no work, part-time work, etc). Thanks!
