Question on job search, offers, and followups
« on: April 10, 2015, 08:31:11 AM »
Not me, but a close friend.

She interviewed at 4 places Monday to Tuesday (trying to relocate). She would rank them A>>B>C>>>D. So A is by far the preferred, B is slightly better than C, and C is way better than D (wouldn't even accept an offer unless it is paying stupid money).

Well, C got back to her yesterday with an offer. And it isn't great. The salary is on the low end of the range, and the benefits are pretty bad. She emailed them back, asking for more complete benefits information before she makes a decision, and they said they'd get that to her today.

Place A is the place that she really wants to work. Their benefits are pretty good, and the job itself is MUCH better, to the point that she'd take less money even than what the other place offered her. She emailed them asking when they were going to be making a decision, she has an offer from another employer, blah blah blah (Obviously much more eloquently worded than that). They responded that they will make a final decision by Tuesday.

She wants to reply with the following (see below). Is it appropriate? Would you change anything?

Hi person,
Thank you so much for the quick response. I know the selection process can be time staking. I am going to hold off on my other offer until I hear back from you. My preferred job is the position as POSITION NAME at EMPLOYER NAME. I am very excited about the job prospects and what this could mean for my career path and future. Please know that I am more than willing to pursue my EDUCATION REQUIREMENT and any other certifications recommended or required.

I look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you so much,
BLAH BLAH BLAH

Note that the education requirement isn't a Masters or anything, more of a certification that is not difficult to get in her position.

Do you think that this is too much as begging? Killing negotiating power if she does get an offer? Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone!

I probably wouldn't send anything additional right now if she's already done the follow-up message and they've given her a timeline for a final response. If they offer it to her, then she has more negotiating power. If they don't, she has the other offer as a backup and maybe another opening will happen at the preferred employer and she could reapply, and she could work on the education requirements in the mean time.

Definitely fix that first. In college I sent an email thanking a corporate recruiter for interviewing me for an internship for the summer of 20008.

This is to place A? Yeah, I wouldn't do that. They told her when they'd get back to her, and it's not an unreasonable time frame.

Also, I don't think "staking" has a meaning that works in that sentence: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/staking. Time consuming maybe?

Yeah, agreed on the "staking" part--that was one I was going to change.

I mostly agree with you guys, and am will just tell her to reply with a simple "Thank you, I look forward to hearing your decision".

Wait until Tuesday for A, follow up with B today/Monday (depending on if it's still business hours where you are.)

Find 100 other positions as good as A, apply to all of them as well.
