Need work advice/encouragment!!
« on: January 11, 2018, 02:38:06 PM »
What would you do?
Choices:
- Stay in crappy work situation but sweet part time deal for 5 more years
- Switch practice groups for 3 years, which would increase work to full time and hope I don't slit my wrists with the stress but retire earlier (although no guarantee that there wouldn't be interpersonal conflict there either...)
-Quit job and... ??

Here is my situation:
38yo. Have worked as a healthcare professional for 11 years. The job is rewarding, I'm finally working a manageable number of hours (my work/life balance is perfect!), the patients are mostly delightful, and while most of my colleagues are a joy to work with, one in particular is not (one of the most senior partners), and when we wrote her a letter to address concerns about workplace harassment after a complaint from an employee, she threatened the rest of us with a lawsuit claiming racial discrimination which in my view is complete and utter nonsense.  We are working with a mediation company to try and resolve some issues, but I don't hold out much hope. So that is a picture of work - mostly good, but incredibly crappy in this one area.

My financial picture: we are 79% of the way to FIRE. Another 4-5 years and we'll have it. Although if I go back to full time work, it would take about 3 years.

I need some ideas/encouragement.

Can you do the same work at a different workplace?

At 79% to FIRE, you are a great candidate for a downshift career.  Is there something else you'd like to do, instead, that will still earn a little money?

What are your plans for FIRE?  Do they exclude ever working for money again?  If you can't resolve or wait out this bad situation, your options 1 and 2 sound too stressful to be worth it, given how close you are to your number.

Is there no chance of part-time work somewhere else?

Could you take a sabbatical and keep your qualifications current?

Is there seasonal demand so you could work a few months a year rather than part-time every week?

These are great ideas - I never thought of simply taking a sabbatical, which is entirely possible! I'm going to give it until after our next mediation meeting, and if I still feel there is little hope of change, I'm going to pursue this.

Thanks!

There is always job availability in the health care industry.  I doubt you would have any problem finding another place and be able to find work/life balance, good compensation, etc.  At minimum put some feelers out with other companies.  If you have friends at other places ask them about possible openings.

Not knowing what you do in the health care industry it is hard to say what is out there, but many positions are going to work from home if it is more on the administrative side.  If it is nursing you may try per diem and then work as much or as little as you want and probably make more money.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
