Question for Mint.com users
« on: May 31, 2013, 01:41:31 PM »
One of the frustrating (might be the only one) that I have with mint is on the budget screen.

On the right side it shows the budgeted income - budgeted spending.  But it doesn't seem to include the "unbudgetted" spending.  Is that right or am I mis reading it?   So when you see your "surplus" (or deficit), it is a bit deceiving.  Is there a better way to see this number?

Is trending the better way to look at that data?

Thanks.

Just go directly to the Budget tab. Below all your budget categories should be an Everything Else category.

Yeah, mine drops into an "everything else" budget, but I don't recall if I created that or if it was a default.

If I recall, "everything else" happens automatically, but might be hard to spot.

Yeah, it's automatic. I created some categories based on what I see in everything else, but there are always a few random ones. But by now I have most of my spending falling into categories.

I know the everything else category exists, but I wish that darn calculation would factor that in, even if it was in a different element.

Like last month I saw that I had a $1700 surplus.  Made me feel good. Till I saw I had spent $1600 in everything else!

I think you're wanting to see your net cash flow.  I believe that is under one of the other tabs, not budgeting.   You're right the budgeting just shows your net if you stick to your budgets and whether you blew your budgets or not.
