Title: Question about car insurance
Post by: wannabe-stache on June 08, 2017, 06:46:15 PM
So i have stumbled across MMM in the last 30 days and it has become a bit of an obsession.  I've cancelled cable; i am taking the train to work (waiting for fathers day to get a bike!); and a number of other boring things I won't cover here.

Now that my gas guzzling SUV is sitting in my driveway, i am wondering:  other than selling it (which i may do eventually, but it is paid off), what options do i have to reduce my car insurance?  i assume i can't call Progressive and tell them "i never drive the car so give me a break".

thanks in advance

We're shopping around and I have discovered that Geico is substantially cheaper (44%!) than State Farm, which is what we currently have. Farmers was more expensive than State Farm. Of course, this depends on cars, driving records, location, etc.

I have had GEICO for around 20 years, but I just did a comparison quote across the board with several different car insurance companies and also found that GEICO was still way cheaper for my coverage. YMMV, but it doesn't hurt at all to price shop the competition yearly to make sure you're getting the absolute best deal.

That being said, you absolutely could also call up Progressive and tell them you hardly drive anywhere. They have the snapshot program, that allows you to plug in a small monitor in your car that will send them actual data on the frequency/type of driving you do, and could get you a significant savings if you are a very light driver (that isn't slamming on the brakes or speeding).

Shop around.

Consider raising your deductible, or even dropping collision/comprehensive.

When you sell it for a more sensible vehicle, get a boring econobox that's cheap to insure.

I was with progressive and I got a quote from Geico that was about 40% cheaper (which surprised me).  They said no way they could match it and were only willing to decrease my rate by like a couple of bucks a month.  So I went with Geico.
