Jobs that a mustachian might like while in saving mode
« on: March 02, 2015, 11:56:04 AM »
I'm obviously very interested in retirement planning, personal finance, money, investing etc. And want to have a career that at least somewhat incorporates my main interest area.  What types of jobs or careers would be good for this?  Financial planning?  Retirement benefits analyst at a corporation?  Economist?  Ideas are welcome

Mine is a travel med tech, I'm getting side tracked for about 5-10 years since I got a job in the fed now and I want the pension >.>. But the travel jobs in my plans so I could travel the country on someone else's dime, find a place I like to retire to and then I can sign up for "work" post FI to supplement my retirement if I wanted. Or I could use it as an excuse to travel back to the US. I know it's my "post" FI job but it's in my "pre" FI job plan too. Reason is that it pays for housing so it helps me save money there. And lets me build a network of connections for post FI so I can work part time at my own pace and not based on a schedule.

What kind of skills and other interests do you have?

If you're a natural teacher, teaching financial literacy classes might be for you.

If you love math, some kind of financial analyst position could be a good fit.

If you're into computers, you could program software or apps for financial management.

There are lots of ways to incorporate personal finance and retirement planning into a career path!  I'd recommend figuring out what you're good at and what you love to do, and then find a way to put a financial spin on that.

Interesting!  In the two responses, there were sort of two takes on my question.  The first one was how to incorporate saving itself into the career, by choosing a job that allowed you to travel and get points and save money that way.  The second response was incorporating the topic of finance into the career itself.  When I first asked the question, I was thinking along the lines of the latter, but both are very interesting ideas to me!

If ER is your goal I would look for work that combines:

1. your skills/aptitudes
2. makes the highest $/hr
3. you don't mind doing

I'd much rather have a job I like okay making $130K/yr than a job that includes my interests that I love for $50K/yr. Assuming ER is my goal.

If you are productive push towards a job that you can do at home. I'm able to get stuff done at 1.5 - 2 times what people typically expect so I meet all my goals and use the spare time to pursue my interests.

As an extroverted, smooth talking, number crunching, problem solver, with a huge inner geek.....I love my job in technology sales. Its only been 3 months into the new career at this point and I am starting at the bottom, my coworkers in the same roll who have been here at least a year are in the low 6 figure income bracket, the next move up into field sales/management puts them into mid 6 figures. Not too shabby for a gig that I would like to get out of in a 10 year time span.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
