Quality keychain multitool?
« on: January 08, 2022, 08:11:22 AM »
I find myself in need of common little tools while "in the field" from time to time, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a high-quality, compact, keychain-size multitool. I have a leatherman type tool, but it's too bulky to keep on me all the time, plus the 4" lock blade on it makes security/police anxious (technically it's legal to carry this in my community, but they don't seem to care about that). I most often have to screw/unscrew stuff (phillips and flathead), open thick cardboard boxes, pry small things apart/open, open bottles/cans. I don't want to get something made of cheap, soft metal that'll wear away quickly.

Any recommendations?

Sounds like exactly what an old-fashioned Swiss Army knife would provide.

Leatherman has a micra keychain tool that is 2.5 inches long closed.  Maybe that would be what you need.

I have a Leatherman squirt, same size as the micra, different set of tools.

Leatherman also makes a bracelet that you can (supposedly) fly with.  My husband has had one for several years and loves it.

Let us know what you decide on.

I recently got a Leatherman Micra. Seems like a great little gadget so far, but it hasn't seen a lot of use yet so I can't speak to durability, etc.

I've owned a Leatherman Micra for almost a decade.  Love it!

They've got a smaller knife blade and usually a decent selection of small tools.  Usually there's a slot and phillips screwdriver, can and bottle-opener, a saw, and some small prying tools.

I like the pliers on the Squirt.   I haven't seen those on a swiss army knife although they usually have other useful tools.

My problem with the Swiss army knife is that the scissors sucks.  It's just a tool that flips out and is tiny.  The Leatherman Micra has a sweet scissors that is the tool actually folding open.  That's why the Micra is superior IMO... the badass scissors.
