Purchasing an optimal bed for myself the mustachian way
« on: November 15, 2016, 08:13:39 PM »
Hey guys,

This will be my first mattress purchase, just hoping for advice on where i should look and what type i should get.

Should i get a frame?
Whats the best and most affordable bed i should get?
Im single and 5'5". What size should i get?

As a side question, i make 70k and going to be roommates with my friend and split a $950 rent all utilities included. That's a good deal right?

Following because I'm also mattress shopping!

I'm trying to find a balance between cost and quality.  Sleep is so important for well-being I absolutely will not scrimp on quality, but I also don't want to just throw money at this because I know the relationship between cost and quality is not linear ;-)

I'm interested in thoughts on some of the newer mattresses that are being sold like Purple and Casper - are they all hype or something to really consider?

I was looking at those as well.  I'm about to buy a Tuft & Needle.
I don't have any solid reasons for preferring T&N over the others.  The reviews did seem good though.

I took a total stab in the dark when I purchased a mattress for my SO and I a few years ago online. We ended up getting this mattress from Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CT37L0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Without ever laying on the thing before buying it, it turned out to be a fantastic purchase. Very comfortable and reasonably priced. There were a ton of positive reviews that really helped us make this choice. I'm sure not testing a mattress in advance isn't for everyone, but no regrets here. Plus the free shipping didn't hurt either, and it showed up at our apartment rolled up in a surprisingly small box.

At the extreme end, I recently switched over to sleeping on a
traditional Japanese rollup futon, $58 + shipping.

In addition, I ordered a tri-fold foam bed that fit the futon
perfectly ($65, free shipping):

Since you're single, this might be an option.  For me, it's comfortable
and can be folded away and put in my closet when not in use.

I ordered a novos bed about this time last year.  Was expensive buy I am satisfied with the price to value.

Novosbed was the reccomeded brand when i made a thread about this time last year.     Perhaps stuff has changed since then.

Again they aren't cheap....

I can vouch for Tuft and Needle. I bought a king size mattress from them about 2 years ago and it's my favorite mattress I've ever owned. My previous mattress was a Serta pillow top and would give me back pain. That is completely gone with the T & N.

Long time reader, first time poster.

We bought a T&N king size mattress about a year ago and absolutely love it. Instead of also purchasing a box spring and headboard, we found this platform bed on Amazon for $258, which eliminated the need to purchase a box spring.

https://www.amazon.com/Zinus-Upholstered-Button-Tufted-Platform/dp/B00W4DCK18/ref=sr_1_4?s=furniture&ie=UTF8&qid=1479324980&sr=1-4&keywords=platform%2Bbed&th=1

We couldn't be happier with both purchases for a total of about $1000!

Not helpful for mattress shopping, but in regards to the above comment; if you want to save money and trouble on boxsprings, here's an option closer to $100 which we love!

Very easy to move, assemble, disassemble, and it's just great as a substitute bed frame and boxspring rolled into one.
