Using kayak the cheapest I've seen is $23 per day for 5 days for a total of $167.

Any other more creative cheap options?  Flying in to Reno.

+1.  What time of year are you renting?  If over the winter months instead of splurging on 4WD you can try renting 2WD for ultra cheap and buying chains ($30-$50).  Many resorts also offer shuttles.
