Title: Potential Promotion
Post by: felizcortez on January 05, 2016, 12:27:46 PM
My newish (7 months) boss was just let go and they are looking for a replacement. I was asked if I would be interested in interviewing for the position by my bosses boss who was promoted out of the role originally.  Not a guarantee that I would get the role, but a decent chance.

Specifics
- I currently make about 240k per year
- New position would be about 300k per year and requires significantly more travel and stress.  I wouldn't have to move as I could stay in my current office.
- Stash Size - 1.13M
- Current Expenses - $52k this year, but would go down after moving away from a HCOL location.  Currently pay 21k per year in just rent and had some expenses that won't occur again in future years.
- Age - 33

Neither my wife and I enjoy living in the midwest, and we are currently planning on pulling the trigger and quitting in July to buy a boat and sail the Caribbean for 1-2 years.  Whether we return to corporate america after that is in question since we could earn significantly less and still maintain our current lifestyle and also live off the stash.  This phone call is causing some further discussion as it would be a good way to pad the stash, but would push out our plans it we moved forward with the opportunity.    The money wouldn't be life changing (only $60k more) but it would provide additional buffer.

My initial reaction was oh crap, I'm going to have to come out with my plans to leave earlier than anticipated.  However, taking this role may make it easier to find a job if we choose to return to corporate america.

I know it's a first world problem, I'm just looking for some additional thoughts.

I'd probably at least interview.  I'm 29 and I'm not sure I could turn that sort of opportunity down, especially when I'm relatively confident I'll still be healthy in 3 years.  Obviously it's a different calculation at 59.  I don't think I would focus on the effect a couple years working that job would have on your stash, I would probably focus more on what you might be able to springboard to with this new additional experience.

Also worth considering: if you quit in a year, will that burn bridges in your industry?

You have 170k to go before you can retire with your current expenses. If you suffer from OMY anyway I would take it, pad the stache, and be done forever.
