Portfolio Value Increase Hindcast
« on: September 22, 2014, 12:48:10 AM »
So, I have a portfolio and don't know if it is doing well compared to what I could have had from an alternate theoretical portfolio of Vanguard mutual funds that I have in mind.  I tried plugging into a spreadsheet mutual fund prices for the theoretical portfolio showing change between 01/02/14 and 09/19/14 and it showed an increase in value of about 4%.  However, this did not account for distributions during that time period which would have added further significant value.

I'm sure I have seen mention of a tool to show what past performance of funds in such a theoretical portfolio would have been on this forum, but can't remember what/where it is.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Here's my favorite, you can plug in up to 5 funds and compare them.

You're correct, price alone doesn't work because funds distribute out their capital gains and dividends annually
