Stovetop keeps getting hotter (electric)

At first I thought I was imagining things. I put my electric Stovetop burner on 3.5 to heat up my steel pan. I had been doing that for a year. A few days ago I started burning everything.  So then I tried 3.25 which worked for a couple of days and now that's burning everything. What could be going on? Is my oven going to explode? And yes if  I catch it in time I can lower the heat.
Any suggestions?  Or search terms I could look up? "stovetop keeps getting hotter" hasn't turned up anything yet.

Inability to Adjust Heat
Electric coils sometimes fail to adjust to the desired heat level issued by the switch. You may find that once a specific burner is turned on, heat level cannot be adjusted. It goes to the highest level and remains in this mode as long as it is on. Inability to adjust heat while cooking can be frustrating especially when cooking foods that require “simmer” mode. This occurrence may be linked to faulty ignition switches. Turn off all switches. Unplug the burner and fit into a different receptacle. Turn on cooker and adjust switch to different levels. This will help you determine if the switch is faulty. Replace all faulty switches.
