Podcast in the car question
« on: January 16, 2016, 02:15:37 PM »
I preface this by saying, I've had a neuro incident and understanding new tech stuff is hard, if I sound moronic, it's accidental.

I have a 2012 Accent. It has it's own weird cable that hooks to the old fashioned iPod, the one where the end is about an inch long. It does an incredibly horrible job of managing iTunes through their weird menus. It will not fit an iPhone 5s, not really sure it would be any good if it did.

I would like to be able to hear my iPhone podcasts through the car speakers, car does not have Bluetooth.  I read about all these ways to do it and frankly found it confusing  and overwhelming.  I am assuming I need something like the old FM transmitters used in cars before cars had Bluetooth and what not.  Right?  But others talk about these quite expensive set ups and the radio gets modified. The less expensive and easiest to understand way is what I'm looking for.

I do not care about sound quality, if I can hear it I am happy.  If you all suggest it, I will try putting podcasts on the iPod and continue to use the Accent's crappy cable because that does put music through the car speakers.  it's just so much easier to get podcasts on my phone, kwim?

any advice or a link to what you use would be greatly appreciated

FLA,

It should be an easy fix. There are a lot of adapters on the market like this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S3Q53JQ?psc=1  Just look around amazon or at any retail store and you should be able to find something that works.

Bummed, didn't support my Apple device was the error message, it kept trying to connect but only got static.  My stupid Hyundai, they couldn't just give you an USB port, they had to make a proprietary cable and their own awful system of how iTunes works and displays.

So next attempt would be to put Podcasts on my old iPod?  You can still do that on iPods, right?

Yes, you can still do that.

I'm guessing that this is the factory installed radio?  One medium-priced option would be to purchase an after-market stereo to put into your vehicle that will have a simple 3.5mm plug that goes directly into the headphone jack of your iPod/iPhone/iPad/laptop/phone/whatever.  There's an "AUX" button on the stereo and whatever is playing on your iPod/iPhone plays through your cars speakers.  That is the most tech-simple way to do this.  The stereo does not attempt to control the iPod/iPhone. You can buy these stereos new for under $75.

Only slightly more technical is buying a stereo receiver that allows better control of your iPod/iPad/iPhone *and* has an "Aux" jack to give you some level of "future proofing".  Such stereos can be had for under $100 as well.  Just be aware that as techonology advances these stereos often loose the ability to correctly control newer devices, so the iPhone 7 or 8 might not work well on them.

I used this in my old car and this worked great: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M2ON7KC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

Just plug it into the lighter socket, set a FM # that isn't taken (like 88.8) and turn your phone's bluetooth on. It should pair automatically and sound quality is pretty good.

This is the kind of thing that DH added to our cars to make them "bluetooth enabled."  They work very well for playing pandora and podcasts in the car.  I don't use them for making calls b/c the ones we have don't carry input very well.  But for output, they work like a charm.
