Tips on Remembering Names
« on: April 18, 2016, 10:16:15 AM »
Anyone have some great tips on remembering peoples names when you meet them? I know I could probably find this information in a google search, but was wondering if people on here had some good surefire ways that work for them.

I am very intelligent, but absolutely horrible about this, even forgetting within a minute of meeting someone. It's quite embarrassing to still be talking to someone, having just been introduced, and having no idea what their name is. I have a pretty good memory, I'm interested in what they have to say, so what am I doing that this vital piece of information just slips through one ear and out the other?

I'm in a similar boat. What I do is when I hear their name I repeat it in my head and say it back to them. "Hi I'm Person X", and I'll say "Person X?" I'm Apocalyptica602, nice to meet you". Or something similar.

Sometimes while the conversation is still barely getting started I'll repeat their name in my head a few more times while looking at their face "Person X Person X Person X Person X".

I still consider myself 'bad with names' but I think this helped quite a bit.

If you decide to have someone's name tattooed, make sure it is on a part of your body you can see.

And get it right the first time.

If you say the person's name 3 times in the first conversation while looking at their face, that might help.

When you first hear the name, John, for example, look at them and find something in their appearance that distinguishes them.  Red hair, for an easy example.  Then think of some ridiculous way to connect John and Red and repeat that to yourself as you look at John and talk with him.  If you were a fan of the tv show The Mentalist, for example, you might think "This is Red John, the serial killer!  Red John!  Yikes!  Red John!"  The next time you see this guy, you might think he's a serial killer, but at least you'll remember his name.

I always superimpose someone else who I know with the same name on to them.  For example, if I were to meet a Chris, I would remember by thinking of the other Chris I know while talking to them.  I am not sure that this technique will work for everyone. but it sure does for me.
