Moving domain registration?
« on: August 14, 2015, 06:33:06 PM »
I have an old website (with lonex) and I want to use that old domain name for a new website hosted somewhere else (squarespace). Do I need to get into Lonex and "point" the domain name to the new host? Or can I just cancel lonex and swoop up my old domain name and use it when I upgrade my squarespace website to a paid website (which includes a free domain name)?

What I would do is transfer the domain itself to a third party registrar like Namecheap, then use their DNS servers to point it at Squarespace or wherever. Using a 3rd party is a form of insurance, so you don't have to worry about your hosting provider hijacking your domain name (this has happened to me in the past).

I would suggest not letting it expire and then trying to scoop it, because a squatter will likely be faster on the draw than you.

OK, but how do I transfer it? The instructions seem complicated. Do you have a list of instructions you can point me to? I don't think anyone will want to scoop it though.

To move a domain, you need to go to your current registrar's web site and request an "authorization code".  When you set up your domain at the new registrar, they will ask for the code.  Make sure both registrars have a good email address, because they will send you authorization emails at every step.

Also, most registrars have a support line or chat window, and they will walk you through it.
