Phone screen initial job interview
« on: November 25, 2019, 10:23:02 PM »
Hello,
I’ve had a phone screen interview today with the recruiter.
The phone was scheduled for 30mn and lasted barely 15mn.
I got 4 typical HR question
-what is your leadership style
-tell me about a time you lead an improvement project
-why are you looking for a new role
-what is your target compensation

For each of these i tried to answer succinctly using Star format.
She had no follow up on my answer. I could hear her typing and just say “ok”.

I had the opportunity to ask some questions (to which she barely had the answer) and that was it.

This was my first job interview in very long time, so I’m wondering if that’s sounds right to you.
Very curious to see what are your experiences?

Sounds OK to me, particularly as she didn't seem to know much about the job itself, as that indicates that she is contracted to do a low-level screen and the people who matter will come later.  Here's wishing you good luck with the next round.

I just went through the job searching process.  I had at least 5 phone screens - hard to keep track.  I know I had two for the same company by two different people.

It sounds like this HR was a gatekeeper.  But it’s bizarre how companies do candidate searches these days.  You could have done super well or ok, and the results may not match how it went.

If they don’t call back, don’t take it personal.  I had a phone screen that I thought went really well - and they ghosted me.  I could not get them to even give me a “no”.  Had another phone screen where the questions were different than I expected and I get it was “ok”.  I still got an in-person interview and ended up with an offer.

Keep your head up either way and keep moving forward.  Remember to do your research on the salary for the certain job and then I usually deflect the compensation question back at them (they know more).  If they are pushy, use your research, talk about the “total compensation plan”, and then give a big range (ie- 80-110k).

That can be normal--I've had a lot of those interviews last 15 minutes or less and still get passed right on to the hiring manager. They are really just there to quickly find out if you meet the minimum criteria. I wouldn't stress about it, and in the mean time, keep applying!

@former player : thanks for the positive wishes
@Bumbles8 : I gave them a target base range ($20k wide) and differ to them the bonus based on their internal bonus structure
@zinnie : just don’t I understand how they can decide what can be passed forward based on this 15mn conversation

Anyway thanks to all of you for the reassuring feedback . Will make sure to keep you posted
