What does the $35 plan include overall? Wear on the phone could be a factor, congested network could be a factor, etc... but I don't think that phone wear alone could degrade call quality that much. If you regularly use more than 1.3GB of data a month, something like PureTalk (AT&T MVNO) could be less expensive- just another option.

A 2 year old phone doesn't sound old to me.  Are there some other mitigating circumstances here?  (Dropped in toilet; was the ball in a punt-pass-kick competition, etc?)

I just replaced a 10 year old phone that I believe I dropped at least 1000 times and abused with no recourse.  It was still working, but needed a new battery and a new memory card.  It was old enough that these added up to the cost of a new (cheap) phone.

I've dropped it a couple of times but that's it. See above for what I get for $35.
