Pokemon Go could be Mustachian?
« on: July 14, 2016, 05:22:03 AM »
I've noticed a lot of people at work walking around outside on there breaks with there eyes glued to there cell phones. Some of the conversations I have over heard at work when people are discussing lunch plans is to avoid driving to a restaurant 5 miles away and instead walk a 1/4 mile to the cafe and catch Pokemon on there way.

Does this game have potential to make the world more mustachian?

I'm loving it so far.  I really hope it gets people out and about more.

I learned about this game yesterday.
I don't like the idea of being plugged in virtual reality all the time.
As there was not enough walking/driving while only looking at the phone...

My husband and I have found pokemon go as close to a perfect compromise as we could have come up with. Its outside (me), a game (him), exercise (both), and is an incentive to check out some cool areas of town we wouldn't have otherwise (both).

He'll have the app up on his phone and depending on game criteria will either stop to hunt out something specific and reorient or let the in app vibrate grab his attention. All the while we are walking, talking, and experiencing the city. You don't have to have your eyes glued to the screen .... although I am grateful it is a couple activity just in case.

I will agree to the anecdotal stories of being the impetus for getting off the couch, giving the dogs an extra walk or two, and charting with neighbors who would have otherwise walked by. So far the data usage isn't too bad (he's a cell phone addict anyway, so its on par woth other games he would have open).

The way I understand it is you can't drive and play, the game drops connection when you exceed 20 mph.

This is us too. I think this week was the first time in 10 years he asked me if I wanted to go for a walk.

I too have a husband who doesn't enjoy walks as much as I do and would never want to go.  Since we started playing Pogo, he suggests walks :).  Its great.

I personally enjoy the game. I've noticed a significant uptick in people being social due to it.

Did they add this recently. People have played in airplanes! And I've heard friends say they drove around while kids caught Pokemon.

My understanding is you can't incubate eggs while driving.  That works by steps only.  I've heard that you can catch them while driving but I haven't (and won't!) try that myself, even as a passenger.  To me it's a walking game.

Though I will likely bike to some new spots to walk in the future once I've exhausted those around my work/house.  I'm guessing others will drive to those.  I drive by some places on my way home from work that are likely good spots too.  I can see people just pulling over and grabbing them instead of getting out.  I hope it just gets disabled 100% in moving vehicles to avoid people suddenly pulling over when their phone vibrates.

What I hope happens is they add a cool down timer after you have been in a car. Something like a 5 minute timer I think would be perfect. So no playing while driving and no pulling over at pokestops.

I downloaded it the night before last, and have caught about 190 pokemons in 36 hours (level 9).  My friend in suburbia CA downloaded it a few days before me and has caught only 4, so clearly geography plays a huge roll in it.  My home is near water, so I can catch a lot just sitting on my couch.  (Not exactly the intended "get up an walk".)  My office is a pokestop, so I can reload my items during the day.  People tend to put up a few lures at it over the day, so I could catch a bunch if I wanted then.

While on the train/driving (as a passenger), I've caught some pokemons.  You just need to tap it while it's in the circle - the fight will continue regardless of whether you are past it or not.  It's much harder to catch pokestops while driving (although possible, depending on the speed).  It's virtually impossible to get them on the train, unless you are driving right over them and the train isn't going fast.  I've read that biking actually works pretty good (as long as you don't go too fast).

Haven't evolved or powered up any pokemons, so I can't speak to that.  Hatched only two eggs so far because it took me a while to figure out where my eggs were going.

It's good to get people walking, but it's bad that people are crazy distracted - already almost had a major accident in my city from it.  Also hoping they fix the battery drain.  I'll likely stop playing it much in a few days as I share 1G/month and I'm worried this will put it over.

So sad, I went out for my normal walk at lunch today and you could tell instantly how many people were doing this.....absolutely a noticeable 100-fold increase in people with phones a foot in front their face looking around dumbstruck.  It was a horrible site to see all these people doing this instead of enjoying the park/sun/people.

It might be good for walking but not for social....just one more thing for people to not communicate with one another.

Nah, that would suck for people who live in the suburbs. Pokestops for me are quite a distance from each other, and it's pretty dang hot to walk. I've been working out a route so that I can turn in to places that have them and collect items during my normal, daily driving. I'm able to hit several on my way to work and on my way home without adding a significant amount of time to my drive.

I have been playing for the past week and (assuming you grew up with pokemon and are inclined to play) it's definitely worth a look. I've found myself itching to get up and out of the house. While I agree that the biggest downside is that folks are glued to their screens, there are ways around that. As others mentioned, walking with the phone in your pocket and having it buzz when there is something nearby is a great technique to playing but keeping the phone out out of your face.

To me, what's really neat, is it is drawing people out of their homes who would otherwise not be inclined to do so. Bonus points - it helps you discover landmarks and neat places wherever you go.

But would those people be inside instead?

I find it uses very little data.  Comcast has hot spots all over my town though and I have my wifi programmed to connect to those whenever available so I probably am on wifi for 70% of my walks.

This has been my experience too. It's getting people out that wouldn't otherwise be out. I've personally witnessed plenty of positive social interactions as a result of the game that I'm willing to bet wouldn't have happened otherwise, and have read articles documenting the positive social effects that the game has had on many. I don't see any problem there.

Getting out does not equal enjoying being out. These people are still glued to their smartphones, bumping into trees (happened already), possibly causing accidents by recklessly crossing streets, possibly trespassing (saw somewhere in the news). Read MMM post about a guy idling his truck for more than an hour. that's the same thing - you are outside but in fact you are not! I consider being outside playing with my daughter, gardening, biking, going to a park with DW and DD.

Bout to get a little nerdy, beware.

I'm level 16 so far and I'm about to quit it. The app is sooo bad. It freezes and it's super slow. I know that's more the servers than the app, but it's practically unplayable most of the time. You have no idea how much time I wasted just closing out the app and opening it back up.

The game itself is crap. Very limited in what you can do. Catching the same damn Pokemon when you've drove 20 minutes away to find different ones is BS. The gyms are constantly in flux and there's no good way to hold them and the reward for defeating them is insufficient. The game is going to have to get a lot better to hold people's attention. I know it's more of a social and exercise type thing now, but that's going to get boring. How many times do you really care to ask people what level or color they are?

Eh, you haven't played the app apparently. Of course you'll only read about the minority of bad things that could/have happened - it's the news. So far, I see a lot of social interaction. It just takes one social butterfly to get everyone coming together and talking about the game, other interests, and even lead to walking around together. It's actually great. It's kinda 50/50 at times between being glued to the phone and talking, but people are very active with it and are not just simply glued to their phone like they would be with Twitter or Facebook.

Eh, I haven't and I don't plan to. I have social interaction between my family and neighbors when we do gardening/walk around the block - these are people that I will interact every week with. I don't need social interaction with a person that I will never see again. It's very subjective, of course, but that's me. If one enjoys playing pokemon - it's fine. all is IMHO

I'm probably going to abstain because I've got a really low data plan that I already have problems not going over, some months.

Our local renaissance faire sent out an email yesterday asking that people not go onto stages and interrupt live performances to catch Pokemon. And not to climb over audience members, or go into employees-only areas. So I guess this is a thing that happened?

And then there's this... https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2016/07/12/holocaust-museum-to-visitors-please-stop-catching-pokemon-here/?postshare=2841468336228181&tid=ss_fb-bottom

Good for you, but you're missing the point. I've already seen friendships form and people having a great time with it. Don't knock it till you try it.

I'm level 13 and I am also losing interest already. The game keeps freezing after I catch one, or while I'm trying to collect items (I work beneath a pokestop in a metro area and it happens pretty frequently). Luckily there are people who are always dropping lures. The gyms in my area are always being dominated by players that have 1200+cp pokemons so I'm not sure how others have a chance unless they try as a group...?

Totally bonding with my 5 year old over Pokemon. He accidentally found this show on Netflix [gets max of 1 hour per day], and was into it. He wondered if there were "really" Pokemon around. The App came out a couple months later. He's ecstatic, "I knew they were real!".

Hard to keep up with him as we walk around the neighborhood constantly. We only have one smart phone in the family which is my work phone, so he builds up some anticipation during the day.

For a 5 year old, the excitement is all about "catching them". He could care less at this stage about building them up or evolving or gyms or whatever.

It's a good thing not everyone has the same definition of being outside then, since yours is quite limiting.

The wife and I are going on a date tonight, which just happens to be in a location with lots of Pokestops. After dinner we plan on walking around the area filling up our backpacks and chatting. Normally we'd just get back in the car, head home, and watch something on Netflix before going to bed, so I consider this a win for sure.

What does it matter people are glued to their phones? No different then someone reading a book in the park.

The botanical gardens in my city saw a %800 increase in traffic this week, apparently there are several poke stops there. You will be happy to know all that extra traffic and no one has strayed off into the gardens trampling plants to get to Pokemon's.

Ok, I will clarify my "disinterest" for this.

The fact that people get outside is great.
But as the poster above pointed out, reading a book is still kind of keeping you with your head down, same effect from this point of view.

What I like is the fact that in this game you learn about places of interest.
You get to socialize through this game - at least this is what feedback here suggests.

But, for me the problem is that people "need" a game like this to get out/find about places of interest/socialize?
I get out because I like it (and I don't get enough unfortunately, this is why I want to FIRE :)). I can thank my parents for that as they took us in vacations to the seaside and hiking yearly. While that might have impacted their FI, it meant a lot to me and I can really appreciate it now.

Yeah. You know what? Some people do. And if this is what gets them to do it, and they enjoy it, that's awesome. Good for them.

I like to go outside. I like to ride my bike. Grow shit in my garden. Sit around with my friends and throw down a couple beers. And sometimes I like to throw the app on, go out for a walk, wait for that magical little vibration, and catch me some of them Pocket Monsters.

To answer the heart of the question I suppose Pokemon Go is Mustachian. As far as I am aware it is a free game so since you do not have to pay for it that does make it mustachian in that sense.

Unless you're mustachian to the point where you don't have a phone plan - my situation.

^^^ This. While it might be lovely if everyone enjoyed nature/the outdoors/exercising in exactly the same way I do, different people have different likes and dislikes, and if this is making their lives better in some way or they are enjoying it, good for them.

I agree, this is why I said that for me it is like it is. And I quoted the need part. As I thought more about this I arrived to that conclusion but perhaps I did not express it correctly.
I like to go out for going out and I like playing computer games inside 😃.
Other people go out for going out and for playing computer games, others don't like to go out or play computer games...

It might be good for walking but not for social....just one more thing for people to not communicate with one another.

The tons of people I've talked to, both playing and trying to figure out how in the hell to play, would disagree.

It's a video game, yes, but it involves being outside, going interesting places, and the player density is probably 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than Ingress, which is the previous game by the same company.

Unless you have unlimited data plan, this is not Mustachian

I can't speak for other people, but I've been playing a bit in the evenings and when I'm out on a Project Fi device, and I've used... 0.15GB.  Some of that is from other data.  It's really not very data intensive, which is something Niantic got much better at from the early days of Ingress (which was using uncompressed JSON exchanges).

I pay $10/GB, so data cost of the past few nights of wandering has been $1.50.  I'm pretty well OK with that.

People fucking drive to catch a pokemon? That is as bad as it could be. lights out

Yup.  They drive for other reasons too.  People drive a lot.  I mean, I've heard people who I'm pretty sure were out driving just for the sake of driving.

Get over yourself.

Well, here we go: http://jalopnik.com/pokemon-go-user-playing-while-driving-successfully-catc-1783609111
"An Auburn, N.Y., man told police that he swerved into a tree Tuesday night while trying to play Pokémon Go, reports Syracuse.com. The 28-year-old player suffered no serious injuries, however, the entire front end of his car was mangled in the crash. “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” doesn’t include plant life, bro."

I do not play myself, but I can say this is a global phenomenon.  My family was in Italy when the game came out.  We saw a mother and daughter both playing on the train.  We thought it was neat to see them doing something together, and they were very social to each other while playing.  I would think they would have been much more likely to be doing their own thing alone while physically together without the game.

I saw on the news a mother was blaming the game for her son running out in the street and getting hit by a car.  To that I say a future Darwin award candidate.

Last night coming home, the entire Interstate overhead message system in Milwaukee had the following message "Drive now... Catch Pokémon later"

As a Computer Scientist, I am impressed with the simplicity of the game, and how they managed to create such interest.  They might have created a new genre, we will wait and see if there is a rush to spinoff/copycat. The adaptability of the game will determine how long it will last.  Remember clash of clans?  Spun several similar games (boom beach), and some of them I am sure even used the same libraries and are in fact mostly the same game that looks different.  The best I remember doing this was the Halo series.  What is the difference between Halo 3 and Halo 3 ODST?   $59.95  :)    Impressive.  Candy crush et. all. had quite a run as well.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
