For those with blogs
« on: July 22, 2015, 11:10:44 AM »
I am considering starting a blog in order to make myself more accountable towards my self-sufficiency/homesteading/FI goals. I would also like to improve my photography and web skills. I just got married and we're expecting our first child in a about a month. It's been kind of a whirlwind, we're 29, we don't have any non-mortgage debt and the blog would be about me having the goal of leaving my 9-5 in 2-3 years and us moving to a homestead from the city while juggling new family responsibilities. I want to track it all, our "new life" sort of thing, and really "get serious" about these nebulous goals.

The question I have is, neither of us are big social media users, our introversion extends into what we publicly post. (very very little at the moment) But my family is very spread out and I know they would probably enjoy reading more about some of our day-to-day and projects and things, esp with the baby. The thing is, I'm not sure I'm ready to open up for commentary all our goals. There are also some of my family who wouldn't really "get it" if I was transparent about our finances and things, which would be the whole point. Its not just for photos and cute stories, or not the reason I would be doing it. At the same time, I don't want to blog to no one!

Sooo I'm torn. Has being mustachian and also publically mustachian worked out for the bloggers out there? Do you tell family/friends (ie post a link in Facebook?) or just keep it your corner of the internet and if they happen to find it so be it?

I have told my husband...wouldn't tell my parents as we don't share a lot of values.
Won't tell my colleagues since some of the topic is downshifting.

It depends on what the purpose of your blog is.

Do you want to monetize it?  You may not want to share with friends and family, because they may be jealous, if you're sharing lots of personal financial information (or you may want to, as they may help spread the word).

Is it to keep friends/family updated on your life, as stated here:

Then obviously you want to tell them.

We're going to be traveling, and having a kid, so we'll probably blog at some point just to keep everyone updated, with no plans of monetizing it (and thus no demand on frequency or quality of posting).  That's obviously a very different point and purpose than someone like ROG, who makes money from his blog.

Think about what you want, and why.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
