Title: Paleo eats at Costco?
Post by: SondraRose on October 20, 2013, 06:53:24 PM
Hey Paleo/Primal Mustachians!

I am putting together a shopping list for DH for his first official trip to Costco (45 min away, so he will only go there after hiking in the nearby mountains).

It's been years since I shopped there and hubby only had a brief looksee last week.

What's good to get?  I have coconut oil, smoked salmon, and cheese on the list thus far...

We grow most of our own veggies, so we are covered there.

Thanks for any ideas!

Costco has organic olive oil for a decent buy.

I like the frozen fish - wild Alaskan salmon and Mahi fillets - great deal compared to anywhere else I have seen

Chia seeds - Organic Nutiva brand

Organic coffee beans too:)

Green tea flavanols

Omega 3 supplements

CoQ10

Pistachios

Almonds

Saigon Cinnamon (as well as other spices in bulk)

Produce can be cheap but there is the guilt it comes from Peru or somewhere far away not to mention it is picked well before it ripens fully so I tend to go to local grocer and farmer's market for that stuff

Pork chops

Ground chuck

Bacon

Personally I find chicken and wild fish to always be cheaper, at least when I buy the fish on sale, at my local grocery store but price compare and you never know.

Grass fed ground beef is considerably cheaper than other grocery stores in my area.  At Costco it's 16.99 for 4 lbs ($4.25/lb) vs. $6.99/lb everywhere else.

KerryGold Irish butter is a good deal too.

Eggs - My fiance and I always get the huge 36 pack. Granted they are not pastured but if you eat a lot of them it's a great deal.

Chicken - Again, not pastured but you can get organic (although that's really just a buzz word since there are so many loopholes).

Salmon - Lots of selection here from frozen to "fresh", wild-caught, etc.

Nuts - All kinds of nuts! Almonds, cashews, walnuts...

Protein Powder - You're not going to find "paleo protein powder" but there are some decent choices (Cytosport Vanilla is my favorite) if you allow yourself to have it now and then.

Chicken Sausage - I think it's the Casual Gourmet brand that I usually get and all of the ingredients listed are paleo.

Romaine Lettuce/Kale/Spinach - Only if you plan on eating LOTS of greens before it goes bad.

Cheese - Not necessarily paleo but they have some fantastic cheese in bulk.

Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage - Great to go with your eggs for breakfast.

Bacon - The Costco by me has Niman Ranch which is really good.

Bison Dogs - Just picked some of these up the other day so I'm not sure what they taste like but they look good (no additives)!

Our Costco recently had cryopacks of grass fed steals for $12-$15 per pound (depending on cut).  Not the cheapest out there , but I've always found Costco meat to be a high quality for the price.  I didn't get the steaks though, so no reviews

Nice ideas, milehighsister!

Wow, dragoncar, that is pricey steak!  We pay between $6 and $8 a pound for local tasty grass-fed/finished.

My Costco paleo staples:

Wholly Guacamole (huge box, 4 packs for $7-8!)
Baby Spinach - 1 lb
Kerrygold grass-fed butter
Frozen chicken wings (not the breaded ones, just the wings)
Pork Chops - 12 pack (they ended up at like $1/chop for me!)
Truffle Oil (can't resist--it's $15 for a huge bottle and makes my hashbrowns and eggs taste that much better, they usually have it around holidays)

Ha.. Well I didn't buy it.  But that's on par with what we can get around here.. Where do you go?

I love guac, but how does this compare to making your own.  In ca you can get a large avocado for $1 or three medium for $2... If they are even close, then it would be worth it for me to buy pre made

Their pre-cooked bacon is easy and delicious, it was even mentioned on marksdailyapple in an older post.

Went there last night and among other things got a giant bag of roasted macadamia nuts and a tub of coconut oil.  Oh and their Avocado prices are pretty good.

But where are you?  Our farmers markets are worse than whole foods (by worse I mean fancier)

Ah, Port Townsend, WA.  We have excellent food available-- most withing walking distance.

Now if they would just make hunting inside city limits legal, I would snag us a buck or two after they finish grazing in the neighbors yard...

Great ideas, everyone!  Thanks again.

We scored on the olive oil, wild salmon, cheese and coconut oil.  No Kerrygold or Nimans Ranch bacon, unfortunately!

Ahh!!!!  I LOVE Port Townsend.  Lived there for about six months a few years ago.  Loved the Coop!  Loved that I could walk EVERYWHERE.  Always an event to go to, always something going on.  And yes, I remember seeing SO many deer walking through the neighborhood.

I normally am NOT a "convenience packaged food" person (like 10-packs of goat cheese, pre cut onions, etc) but I will say, the labor that goes into guac vs. the little bit extra you potentially pay for Wholly Guacamole--it's well worth it to buy it packaged.  Not to mention guac starts to turn that gross brown if you don't put it away well, and even if you do, sometimes it doesn't hold up well.
