DH has overpronation diagnosed by a podiatrist. Both the podiatrist and his GP recommended Brookes Beast running shoes. DH is not a runner but he wears these runners most of his waking hours, except when he's at work wearing business shoes.

Edit: they are very expensive in Australia (around $240) but we figure it's worth the cost to save longer term damage/surgery etc

I've done well with Asics and Sauconie.  But your best bet is to go to a proper running shop where they will check your running in various shoes.

For running you definately need a specific shoe for overpronators. I'm an overpronator too and I've been wearing asics kayanos for the last 15 years and have happily run marathons in them. They can be expensive, but i get previous years models on amazon for close to half price. I think the most recent model is the kayano 22, but I got a pair of kayano 21's at half price on amazon recently. All brands will have specific shoes for overpronators though so if there is a particular brand that suits you it might be worth checking out their overpronator shoe.

Go as flat or barefoot as possible.  I had plantar fasciitis, pain in the knees (runners knee) and some hip pain and was for years using shoes with cushioning, inserts, arch supports, etc.  Went with totally flat, no toespring, plenty of room in the toebox and your feet feel amazing.  The main vendor I use is Lems you can see their styles on their website.  For more info on why these work for many common feet problems check out the videos here at this podiatrist's website.  https://www.nwfootankle.com/ to save you some time the link to the youtube videos is in the bottom left corner of the site.

I don't run any more. I do use some off the shelf insoles [$30] that a foot/walking specialist at a sports health clinic fit me with. I use them in all my shoes and they are great.

I've spent $3K+ on various custom orthotics with no success, but the $30 insoles make my feet very happy. Go figure.

Another vote for ASICS. I am a moderate overpronator and have worn the ASICS 21xx, GT-2000 and others for about 25 years including lots of marathons and other races. They always worked for me and I never felt the need to change.

I wear New Balance motion control running shoes with orthotics that help hold up my arch so its tendon doesn't get injured by over stretching.

I recently found out I do this and that it's related to the knee pain/popping I have.  I got some new shoes at a small, local store with real foot experts and the guy put little wedges under my inserts.  I tried them for a week and although it felt weird it was also better.  It's been three weeks now and I'm seeing real improvement.

I walk, don't run, so maybe you do need special shoes but if you can go to a similar place, it might help.  (I wouldn't feel comfortable putting the wedges in myself because I suspect bad placement would be worse than none.

I have a friend who is an Olympian, a friend who is an Army Ranger and my wife is a personal trainer that has had issues with plantar fasciitis. They've all been given the same advice: get some custom orthotics from a podiatrist and buy some medium quality running shoes. Don't be fooled by all the fancy foams and running shoe designs, like most things it's just a marketing technique and they haven't been proven to help your feet.

If you're talking about running shoes, I love my Mizuno Inspires. Non-running shoes, I don't know -- orthotics might be the way to go.

One nifty little trick I've learned: Feel the heel cup of a shoe. If it's very stiff and doesn't squash when you squeeze it, that's going to be good for an overpronator because the stiff heel cup will hold your heel in place better as you walk/run and prevent it from rolling inward. Soft heel cups don't offer the stability you need. The only brand I've ever found to offer firm heel cups in all their models is Mizuno.

Yep get the beast! Another option is custom made inserts if it's really bad. I now use these after breaking both feet in multiple places. If you aren't the bad the beast is great for running.

There's a reasonable amount of evidence to say that there's absolutely no need for overpronators to wear different shoes.

Eg http://www.runnersworld.com/sweat-science/does-pronation-matter
http://www.scienceofrunning.com/2010/01/why-running-shoes-do-not-work-looking.html

(google will give you dozens more such links.)

My advice would be to buy shoes that fit and feel good. If you're still having pain with knees and heels with new shoes, then investigate why that is

This should explain what the issue is and how to fix it.

As others have suggested - go see a podiatrist and/or go to a foot clinic or specialist shoe store.  They will verify what you need and take your measurements.  That way, you can buy the correct orthopedic insoles to put in various shoes you typically wear.  Some shoe stores have the ability/machines to do it for you, and won't even charge you (they of course are not a podiatrist/orthopedist but YMMV).

I am an overpronator and own a pair of Saucony arch-lock support walking shoes, and orthopedic insoles for my work shoes.  I'm also usually able to swap out my insoles for my formal wear shoes as well.  Well worth the investment.

Now if I can just find boots that work with it.

Agree with the above advice. A specialist shoe place can often get a decent read on all your gait issues by looking at your old pair and a brief observation.

I've had custom orthotics for years now and they're great. I've also had great success with the Brooks Dyad line of running shoes FWIW.
