Title: Options for moving to Part Time / Telecommuting
Post by: AndrewJackson on December 30, 2013, 05:06:11 PM
First post. I have been lurking around this site for a good while and have been contemplating different methods of attaining financial independence and an overall higher quality of life. Obviously, the most important thing is to reduce expenses and then reduce expenses some more. However, If I really want to speed up the path to ending the rat race, I think the best way is to find high paying part time/telecommuting work. My goal is to make at least 30-40 an hour and work 15-20 hours a week. I am very young (only 23), and am hoping to make this change in 5-7 years. If such an opportunity existed, I could keep my skills sharp and let my investments grow by 100% funding my spending with earned income.

My current skill set is bent towards the quantitative side. I have past all levels of the CFA (still need work experience to fulfill the designation requirements) and am working in financial services (specifically trading). I have bs in math and finance and very amateurish programming skills, although I really do enjoy programming (actually thinking a masters in computer science might be a good idea). I also have the requirements completed to take the CPA exam and do enjoy financial planning type conversations a lot.

So my question for my fellow mustachians is what steps should I take (skill attainment or career changes) to within 5-7 years be in the position to earn 25-35k annually with a part time / telecommuting job? What sort of positions fulfill these requirements? Am I just dreaming to think I can earn this type of money with minimal time and flexibility via telecommuting?

I don't think it's a pipe dream. I telecommute and travel for work - am in sales.  With your financial background, have you considered jobs in procurement?  I ask because many of the procurement people I negotiate with at the companies I sell to telecommute or work PT from home. Companies like IBM, Deloitte, Accenture are all about telecommuting; those jobs likely have travel involved as well.
