One spouse on VA health care, one on ACA - anyone here?
« on: December 22, 2015, 11:26:26 AM »
Curious if anyone here is in this situation:  one spouse eligible for veteran's administration (VA) healthcare, and the other using insurance purchased through an ACA exchange.

My wife maintains her VA healthcare, but currently uses it only for some prescriptions that are free or cheaper than under my health insurance (provided by my employer).  She says she likes her VA doc and doesn't have any issues with the treatment she's gotten through the VA, but says it's more bureaucratic and less flexible than under private insurance.

I am not eligible for any VA coverage, so in retirement (post-FIRE, pre-Medicare), I'll have to get insurance through ACA.

Anyone else in this situation?  I was previously thinking that we'd have to cover both of us under ACA, but if my wife is covered by the VA, maybe this will save us some $.

Thanks - good to know about the effect on the ACA subsidy. I have some research to do.
