For NOVA folks: mustachian neighborhoods?
« on: May 02, 2015, 09:28:33 PM »
NOVA is Northern Virginia, for those who might not be familiar with the area.

I'm interested in hearing from those who live in or have visited the area, which neighborhoods are the most mustachian?

My criteria (I'm actually interested in your criteria as well as your recommendations):
   - good walk-ability or bike-ability
   - free naturey-outdoorsy things to do/places to go
   - friendly helpful neighbors/community
   - good educational sciencey stuff (planetarium/curiosity zone/that kinds of stuff)
   - kids actually play outside.  Looking for someplace kids can safely walk to a park for a pick-up game or something.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Need more details, like your work location and family size.

For those with kids, it will entirely depend on your work location. Vienna is on a metro line and is pretty nice, but the buy/rent math always means you're renting an apartment or sharing a house with friends, in my experience. Places near Dulles Airport are getting much more dense - if you have a job near there, you can bike to/from work, housing, strip malls (grocery), and free parks. And the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space annex is way better than the DC version. Further out, Ashburn is getting more job opportunities and already has tons of housing.

To the south, Springfield has some potential and further out there is Woodbridge. The accessibility of parks depends on exact location - these are all fairly large 'areas' more than they are 'neighborhoods.' For example, if you work at Quantico, Woodbridge should be on your radar... but if you live/work in Reston, you might not even know where Woodbridge is.

For younger, single people, I recommend Tysons - the apartments there aren't any more expensive than the rest of NoVa, you can walk/bike to Metro, and there are tons and tons of jobs. I personally don't care much for Metro (it has gotten expensive) but everyone else my age seems to love it.

I live in Reston. If you pick your location carefully you can get most of what you want.

The north edge and the south half of Reston have most paved trails with houses nearby. We have a metro
station which makes for easy, not cheap, access to DC.

South Reston has the nature center and Reston in general has lots of events for kids.

Though Reston is a more expense place to live in general due to the two layers of HOAs than surrounding areas.

The section in the middle is building up a lot right now, so I don't think it's very walk-bike friendly.

I live in south Reston, so if you have any questions let me know.
