UGH. Didn't notice that something we ordered on Amazon was NOT prime. It cost $12.99. The shipping and handling cost $15.

Stupid tax. =(

HA! I KNEW it would be crazy for us to have missed this. Turns out, their system was being wonky, and it was their fault! It WAS prime! So they're refunding it =)
See if they'll throw in a free month of Prime for their error. Seems to be their SOP. Glad you caught it!

I actually didn't catch it, I assumed I had screwed up! They sent a message saying basically 'mea culpa' and gave us the refund. Super impressed.

We had below market rent in our rental house of 4 years. Told the out of town landlords we were going to try to buy a house and may be moving out soon. Mentioned a few long-term concerns about the rental house (pipes spitting corroded bits of metal, roof missing shingles). Didn't succeed in buying a house after a few tries [Seattle, ugh!], asked to sign another lease.

...40% rent hike.

Don't attract the landlords' attention or be a good tenant and let them know about possible future maintenance.

Before my "enlightenment", Purchased a new 2015 Chevy volt. Work has free charger and have a charger at my house. Financed the car at 3.75%. But here is the catch...... I was 40,000 dollars in debt BEFORE the purchase. Genius me eh?

Don't beat yourself up. You're still plenty young to recover from this brilliantly! Many people don't find enlightenment until much later in life, if at all.

Every time I see this thread I think to add my 2 cents.

My husband and I have wanted to get a kitten for about the last year or so.  So about 2 months ago, we found one we liked on Craigs List and bought her.  We both knew there would be expenses - vet, food, kittie litter.  But neither of us checked into how many vet visits a kitten needed or how much they would cost.  Not to mention the visit for spaying.  I feel a bit silly that I didn't do some research and maybe save up a bit for the vet visits in advance.

However, we do not regret getting the kitten one bit just wished we'd done some research as to the cost so as to not be surprised.

We're traveling across the US and during one of our stops a couple days ago we decided on pizza for dinner. Rather than press the easy button and do a Dominos or Pizza Hut, we decided on the local restaurant.  A personal sized pizza, calzone, and spaghetti ended up costing $50.

Earlier this month, I let my Chase Sapphire card account renew before the one-year mark, getting charged the $95 annual fee.

Anyone have tips for how to get it refunded?

This type of thing has happened to me before!  In general, I have gotten refunds on CC fees by calling and asking to cancel the card.  When account retention specialist comes on, explain that you are canceling because the fee is too high and you don't need the card.  I've always gotten a refund, though sometimes they will change the card to a lower reward one.  This works if you have another CC, good credit,  and genuinely don't need the card you are calling about. At worst, cancel and ask to be prorated for the months you didn't use.

Ouch!! I hope you successfully purchase a home soon!

I recently let my husband "shop unsupervised" (as a Mustachian put it in another thread) and he went to an auto supply store and bought a BOX OF RAGS for $16. Then he washed the car with these very special rags.  Meanwhile, that morning, I had finished going through the laundry and pulled out more old clothes to put in the already overflowing pile of rags in our broom closet.  His sheepish explanation is that he hadn't looked at the price, and thought they were $7. Plus, they came in a box! It's all good though, I make so many mistakes that it's good to have something to tease him about.

This reminds me of my favorite amazon purchase. We bought a Bag of Rags. It wasn't that expensive, and we hadn't been saving up any clothes since we were living in 500sq ft. BUT, there was a 1 star review that just said, "This was just a big bag of rags!?!!!" And oh my god I cried laughing about that. The product NAME is Bag of Rags. What were you expecting!?

I had some happy birthday banners that we reuse each year. I put them up for my DD's birthday 3 months ago but kept forgetting to take them down. I finally remembered today. Needless to say, they weren't salvageable.

Our checking account is the sort that has a linked savings account that pays a small amount of interest, and it's easy to shuttle money between the two. I knew we were about to sail close to the wind due to motoring expenses and a couple of regular bills, so in the course of a busy day yesterday I went online and moved a chunk of money from the savings account into the checking account.

This morning our checking account balance started with a minus sign. WTF? I hadn't spent anything. HOW much had my husband had to drop on his car's annual service? Then I looked more closely. The savings account balance was up, not down. I'd moved the money in the wrong direction.

I've fixed it. We were always dipping into the authorised overdraft before I took control of the accounts and nobody died as a result, so I'll stop kicking myself soon.

So mad! I forgot to move my car to the driveway and now I have a $35 street sweeping ticket!  This is what I get for neglecting to check my calendar in the morning.

Had a stump removed from our yard, bought 5 yards of soil to fill the hole (tree was huge). $30 per yard, bought about 1 yard too much.

The following weekend we decided to plant some trees and ended up with another yard of extra top soil.

So yeah, waste of $60.

Went on a 10 year anniversary weekender last week. We wanted to spend some time at the beach but the only nice one I new of was right by the amusement park. So the second day, after my 5 year old handed out said amusement park's brochures to all families with kids eating breakfast at our hotel, instead of going back to the beach like we were suppose to, I got out voted and we went to the park. At full price. For 2 hrs. Because my son got sick on crappy park food. Essentially doubling our budget and then going home early. *Face palm*

To make matters worse this weekend is the perfect weather to check out the beach again so this time I looked online and found a free beach half the distance away. ugh.

Meesh, your five-year-old sounds amazing! A veritable pied piper of amusement leading all those other families to their financial ruin at that park.

Reviving my old thread because I've been accumulating more idiotic mistakes and must confess.

Missed a doctor appointment for my son: $50 missed appointment fee
Also, not only did I get an expired meter ticket sometime in October (no recollection of this happening, but digging into the pile of papers in my inbox I find the envelope for the ticket) but I also got my fine doubled to $50!

Ouch, ouch, ouch. It doesn't pay to overload a schedule.

I'll join again!

Recent on I can think of: Misunderstood directions about rent payment timing at our new place. Was hit with a $150 late fee. Luckily, spoke to the office, they were super understanding, and they're going to credit the same amount for next month's rent. Still, it was quite a gut punch.

Buying shampoo 2 for the price of 1. Specific brand I wanted was on sale so I grabbed 2 of the XL bottles. Turns out, the XL ones were NOT on sale.. Figured it out at the check-out and didn't feel like telling the cashier to cancel and get back to get smaller bottles. Oh well.. it was just a $7 loss in the end.

Bought a $50 bike seat cover for DD to use when we are biking in the rain. She doesn't like it -- it's too stuffy under the cover. She prefers my $4 plastic raincoat with its oversized hood and thinks it's hilarious that I end up looking like a drowned rat.

I looked in the fridge yesterday and there were 4 separate packages of smoked salmon in there all of them well past their use-by date. My husband has a smoked salmon buying addiction it seems.

Changed my bank account to pay my AMEX and didn't activate the autopay.  Got a $15 late fee and a $5 interest charge!!!

They waived both when I called and made a payment over the phone and asked for them to waive them, but I feel like an idiot.

DH is now worried about my credit score (currently 835)- I think it will be OK. We aren't applying for any loans in the near or far future.

If it is smoked and has been unopened in the fridge all that time, I think you can try if it is still edible, even if it is over the Best before date. Just use your nose for it.

Hirondelle, I've been there too! I suppose if you are going back to the store soon and the sale is still on, there's still time to return the XL bottles...

Freedomin5, any way to cut some extra air holes in the bike seat cover? Or return it?  You can probably resell it at any rate and shrink your loss a little.

That wouldn't be Elvive 2 in 1? My favorite shampoo.
For whatever reason, Norwegian shops often shop selling my favorite goods. This shampoo has been gone from the shops for a few years. I have bought it in foreign countries almost each time I was on vacation. Now I see that a small website is selling it, but for a very high price. I guess I'll wait until the Christmas holiday when I visit the NL. I will order a cheap set with 6 XL bottles and need to carry it home on the plane.

Yes - my husband looked pretty embarassed when I pulled out the 4 packs of expired smoked salmon.  We usually use it to make pasta sauce so we cook it so maybe it would be ok still.

Don't sweat your credit score.  Payments have to be 30 days late to be reported.  You were only 1 day late when the late fee and interest kicked in.  Now if you'd waited for another statement...

This happened in 2004.

So I bought this small metal cash deposit box for $15 dollars. I emptied stuff inside and made it an empty box to secured small important docs in it. Like my SS card.

Anyways, I got a new job and they needed to make a copy to my SS card. So ok, that would be easy, i'll just get that out of my box. BUT NO! For some stupid reason of me I lost the key somewhere and I couldn't find it!!

Then I called the Locksmith guy. He came and didn't say anything much, and unlocked it in less than 2 minutes and charged me a whooping $65 bucks! Ok, so I was happy that I got my SS card and didn't think anything else.

Then he ask me: "how much was the box?"
Me: "$15."
Him: "you could have cut it out and get yourself a new box and saved some money."
Me: silently, "......f*cked me!!".

You know, at that moment I thanked him for his service...and the other part of me I really wanted kicked him in the nuts. I was anxious and I just want to get my SS card. So, I wasn't even thinking that box would become useless after he opened it because the key were gone. I basically didn't think of any other scenarios like what a thief would do and paid the man $65 dollars for something I could had done easily If had took some time to think about it.

I had a dumb one a couple weeks ago. We purchased a rental house in June; the mortgage has a credit line in conjunction with it — for whatever reason, the new mortgage came with an entirely new credit line (even though both are set up on our principal residence) and the old credit line was closed.

I decided I wanted to put our extra accumulated cash against the mortgage (allows for 15% prepayment during each year without penalty) but we don’t have a bank account with that bank. I used my same method as before, set up the LOC as a bill payment, paid it into a credit balance and asked the bank to transfer it over. Except, the money kept not showing up. After a few days, I realized I must have set up the bill payment wrong. ACK!! I remembered I’d had trouble finding the LOC account number, because all of the docs from the bank had the middle portion of the number xxxx’d out. I was relieved when I had come upon a letter showing the full number as I was going through the file, and (gleefully, yes, I am a nerd) set up the payments (multiple payments, because the amount exceeded the daily bill payment limit).

Turns out the letter had been the one notifying me that the old LOC account was closed. Of course this realization happened over a long weekend/bank holiday, so I still had to wait a few MORE days to have the bank find the money sitting on the old account, transfer it, and transfer again to the mortgage.

Overall, this might have cost $30-40 in foregone interest earning in savings/extra interest paid on the mortgage, so hardly devastating; but, oh, the shame! 😳

My parents in law FIREd around 1998/1999 when they were 50 years old.

MIL used to play cello and owned a cello with a document that contained it's family tree.

After MIL lost her mind and moved into a care home, FIL has been minimizing his home. He has given away and thrown away lots and lots of stuff. He doesn't sell anything, because he is sceptic to strangers coming over and doesn't like the fuss.
But some time ago he was interested in selling the cello and found out that he couldn't find the cello's family tree document anywhere. Of course the cello can still be sold, but it has lost at least 50% of it's selling value. For some reason, cellists prefer to buy a cello with an official document.
The document should have been in the safe in his house, but isn't. He has probably thrown away too many things uncritically.
We live quite far away and are not FIREd yet and can therefore often not help him to minimize.

My husband wrecked my Jeep last week.  I just talked to the body shop and it looks like it may be totaled out.  It's paid off, so I'll have about $20k to put towards a new car.  I know that I should absolutely look at buying a small Toyota that gets good gas mileage.  BUT.  I love my Jeep.  It's a completely emotional reaction.  I'm even considering throwing a little extra money at it to get one just like it (if I can find one) that has a few less miles on it.  Go ahead and punch me in the face.  I am signed up to start carpooling to work, which will be paid for by work, so I was already actively decreasing my transportation costs before this happened.

I recently did a gift card offer at our local grocery store. Bought gift cards for things we'd use (Home Depot) & earned a $40 grocery store gift card. It was Thanksgiving morning, we had just returned from a trip the night before & had zero groceries. There were huge lines. I remember the clerk getting the $40 gift card & running it through to authorize it, but I'm 90% sure she failed to hand it to me. If she did, I dropped it before we got to the car. I didn't notice until a few days later when I went to get the gift card (I have a special place in my purse where I keep them). I did ask the store if they had anything in their lost & found, or whether a clerk had turned one in that they'd forgotten to hand out, but nada. I've been overly bothered by this. I'm usually super on top of it, so I feel like a slacker that I missed tracking this down & getting $40 of free groceries.

I used to have a Jeep.  I bought it used from a wealthy friend and loved it. I got over it, because I wanted financial freedom more. Just ask yourself which you would value most and you'll have your answer.

wild_forest, sometimes we get flustered! The $65 you paid was partially for the guy's time. If it makes you feel a little better, he probably didn't think about whether it was worth his while to open it until he had done it, so he didn't screw you intentionally.

Step37, it wasn't perfectly executed, but you will still be saving huge amounts yearly by prepaying. So a pat on the back for that.

MaybeBabyMustache,  ouch!  My brother gave me a $200 gift Crate and Barrel certificate as a housewarming present a few years ago and I think I accidentally threw it away! It was in a card that looked like an advertisement.

Linda_Norway, you are so good at saving money that you had to reach for a relative to find a big mistake like that!  Perhaps the cello document will turn up, at which point you could sell it to the eventual buyer of the cello if you save their contact info.

Sugaree, you didn't make a mistake yet, did you?  Maybe sleep on it and think about the other things you would spend the money on.  If you can't think of anything you want more than a Jeep, it's not a mistake.  If you realize that you would rather have $X worth of something else, then yes, it would be a mistake.

talltexan ... you have confessed and are absolved of all sin. ;)

I'm on a roll this week. Parked in our driveway and neighbor's tree dropped a branch, smashing the windshield.  Why was this a mistake? Because this is the second time it's happened!  Until that tree is gone, we just can't park there.

Tell the neighbor to trim their tree or pay for your windshields.  You have the right to safely use all of your property without the neighbors damaging your property.

(Assuming US, though could vary by state) If the tree was hanging over Poundwise's property, unless an arborist certified it was a hazard wouldn't it be Poundwise's responsibility to get their portion trimmed?

I keep hearing stories about trees and limbs that fall into and damage peoples' property, and it often turns out to be the damaged property owner's insurance that deals with it unless it was shown to be a hazard by an arborist.

From my understanding of the law, it's my responsibility to deal with it. It's a healthy tree, just tremendously tall for the lot size.  The branch that broke our moon roof two years ago was only an inch thick and two feet long.  The branch that broke our windshield was approximately two inches thick and four feet long. We need to think about asking the neighbor if they will go splits in taking the tree down. It will cost thousands of dollars since it will have to be brought down in sections. We're at a weird point where our old neighbors are moving out in two weeks and the new ones are moving in soon. Otherwise, we have to look into getting the tree trimmed over our part of the house... again I can't see us escaping an expense of under $800 for a trimming. On the other hand, a branch will probably kill one of us next, so we are going to have to deal.

Maybe I better add the following to my money mistakes:
Buying a house with many mature trees on a tiny lot.

Didn't sell some low-performing assets at the right time, not it's either waiting more or taking a loss.

Lately, parking costs.  I have had to visit a hospital a few times lately, and the paring there is around $8 per hour.  We can park nearby and walk for around $2 per hour, but are not always doing it because of not thinking ahead.

Probably spent around $40 more than we needed to in the last week.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
