No assets. What to do with £150k GBP? Property?
« on: February 13, 2014, 02:20:51 PM »
I have 150k spare cash. Should I just put the whole lot in stocks?

It's currently 1/3 in UK stock trackers, and 2/3 in cash @ 1% interest.

How about:
- 60,000 as a deposit to buy the flat you are living in at 60% LTV then rent it out
- 60,000 into  stocks and shares -half into high yield shares and the other half into emerging markets and investment trusts
- 30,000 into premium bonds.

I'd invest the bulk of it without knowing further details.

What's your monthly rent? Knowing that could help in the rent vs buy calculation. I know UK has the reputation of being inflated currently, not sure about your area/circumstance.

I am a jock.

Unless you plan to be in the one place for 5 years or more, I'd say keep renting.

On investing the cash, I'd think everyone would need a lot more background to give you a steer.

put it into stocks?  No, since you seem to know little of the stock market.  If you knew more, then you wouldn't need to ask.  I would not put all the money into a flat either; you'd have nothing left.  How's the rental market where you are?  Buy a couple or three buy to lets and rent them out?

Does anything in https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/investor-alley/uk-investment-advice-for-an-absolute-beginner/ help?

150k you could buy one small house and rent it out (live in it for 6 months first to get the better rates), put 20% downpayment, and yeah - invest the rest.

It'll rollercoaster a bit, but over the long term don't worry. At the bare minimum please use up your full ISA room before April...

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
