Using central air system vents
« on: November 08, 2014, 02:26:19 PM »
I have central air in my one bedroom apartment.  If I close the air vents in my living room, would this force more of the air to go to my bedroom vents?   Or is this a silly question?

Also I can force the vents to go up or down but I don't think that really "closes" them. So that may be a factor.

Yes, more air will flow to the open vents.  You can close the vents by putting a big magnet sheet over them.  I remember one year I got some at dollar tree.

Keep in mind that your blower was designed to have a lot of vents open.  The more you close, the more back pressure you put on the fan.  Fans are designed for some back pressure but not a lot.  Don't close all your vents but one or two.  You need to keep the majority open to avoid damage.

Thanks Gimeslot.  My apartment has 5 vents and I closed one of two in the living room.  I want the north-facing bedroom to get more of the heat rather than the south-facing living room.

Also, keep in mind that the thermostat controls when the air goes on and off.  If it is located in the living room it is using the temperature in the living room to control when it goes on and off.  So if you close the vents in the living room, it will keep the heat on until the heat reaches the required temperature in the living room to shut off.  This is also why you are having the problem of the bedroom being cold while the living room is warm, which happens in my house too.

Most vents can also be adjusted to be partially closed rather than just on/off.  I'd go this route first.
