Newbie seeking job/car advice
« on: January 13, 2018, 03:26:40 PM »
Hello fellow Mustachians,

I currently make $53,000 as a teacher. I have a 40 mile(!) round trip commute, I drive my mom’s former SUV (given to me for free) from 2009 which averages 15-18 MPG.
I have the opportunity to work at a closer school making $47,000 which would cut my commute in half, and I would save at least $120 a month in gas & tolls.

I’ve cut down spending as much as possible in almost every other area of my life, but gas, commute, and freeing up 1 hour of commute time each day for a potential 2nd job are decisions that I’ve been contemplating. (If I worked at the closer school, I could make $12-20k+ working a 2nd job). Also, I would not consider living within a 5+ mile radius of where I currently work. If forced, I would work closer to where I live, due to better public infrastructure, shorter commute, and potential for higher salaries (in different fields) in this market.

If you have any more questions, I’d be happy to answer.

Thanks
