Commuter bicycle question
« on: June 05, 2015, 06:23:00 PM »
I am looking to start a 7-8km round trip bike commute. I want to do it all winter ( snow, salt ,-20c)and take two kids and work in an office. Also i am looking to help support the local bike shops. That being said what is everyones opinion of the relative benefits between the specialized elite crosstreck and louis garneau m1 espace.

http://m.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/multi-use/crosstrail

The garneau is 200$ or 300$ cheaper and comes with a 29x2 tire which i think will do better in poor weather and shoulder seasons. The specialized looks like itll be faster in good conditions and potentially more comfortable. The owners for the specialized shop seems as willing to work with me on package deals for all the accesories.

As someone who has commuted on bike to several jobs at different distances I can say for sure to ditch the front shock! It's just unnecessary for the road and will sap power and adds to the cost of the bike. I currently ride to work on a 20 year old specialized stumpjumper that I put a rigid front fork on. This has worked well for  towed my daughter in a Burley kids trailer.

My recommendations:
Look at the Specialized Diverge or comparable. Look at craigslist for a Specialized Sequoia or other sport touring/ endurance road bike from the last few years. (My wife has a sequoia but with womens bars and seat. It's a fantastic bike. comfortable and perfect for commuting). I myself am looking at these options right now as my old stumpjumper is getting close to the grave.
