As someone who has commuted on bike to several jobs at different distances I can say for sure to ditch the front shock! It's just unnecessary for the road and will sap power and adds to the cost of the bike. I currently ride to work on a 20 year old specialized stumpjumper that I put a rigid front fork on. This has worked well for towed my daughter in a Burley kids trailer.
My recommendations:
Look at the Specialized Diverge or comparable. Look at craigslist for a Specialized Sequoia or other sport touring/ endurance road bike from the last few years. (My wife has a sequoia but with womens bars and seat. It's a fantastic bike. comfortable and perfect for commuting). I myself am looking at these options right now as my old stumpjumper is getting close to the grave.
