Her union should already have her covered to a certain amount but I suggest you two research it first.
She decided that her union was not representing her as she saw fit and left it. There was some other organization providing that coverage and some other benefits which she joined, probably a similar thing. I couldn't tell you about the specifics but I recommend her having some sort of insurance.
A friend of ours went through hell at the end of her first year and was close to lawsuit territory. Remember, the district and school are looking out for the district and school, the teacher may need to have his/her own coverage.
