Title: New bed, new mattress...is Ikea Mustachian enough?
Post by: MVal on November 05, 2016, 11:06:22 AM
I am single and considering changing from a full bed to a twin bed to save space in my small bedroom. The mattress I use wasn't new when I got it and I've been sleeping on it about 7 years anyway, so I suppose it might be a good time to do some sleeping arrangement changing anyway.

I'm considering getting the Hemnes Day bed at Ikea. It's a twin, but has a very neat trundle design that can convert the bed to a full size quickly. This would be handy if I wind up not liking sleeping on twin, or if my parents come for a visit and I can give them my bed and I'll sleep on the couch. Also, if I wind up moving soon, I could use it for a couch/guest bed in a new apartment.

Ikea is having a 15% off sale until the middle of November on bedroom furniture, so that is why I'm considering this right now. Would you consider buying furniture at Ikea rather than most other furniture places a better choice, financially? I'm looking on Craigslist and cheap, quality beds seems to be hard to come by.

I'd say IKEA furniture is not a lifetime investment, but you may not want the same bed for the rest of your life, either.

I do not, personally, find the IKEA mattress that is recommended for the day bed to be very comfortable, so make sure you spend some time testing it out.

Yes, I have my doubts about the comfort of their mattresses. I'd like to get a memory foam mattress, but I may simply get a cheaper coil mattress and then add a memory foam topper.

The bed is also appealing for the storage drawers beneath it which seem very handy. Not to mention it would be much more organized and clean than the dusty, mysterious piles of crap that seem to accumulate under my bed.

So do you (or did you) actually have an IKEA mattress? Perhaps I would be better off with purchasing a mattress elsewhere if I get the bed frame.

Then there's the little problem of assembling the damn thing. Pretty sure I'm going to need a lot of help with that as I'm not terribly handy. My roommate is also considering buying something from IKEA during the sale and we might be able to get a deal our favorite handy man helping us put it all together.

Just googled to remind myself which daybed this was and found this kind of hilarious short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2lZjIRn2W0) of someone assembling one (it's speeded up, so only a minute and a half long) - will give you some idea of what is involved. It doesn't look too bad really.

When I first moved here I got a Meldal daybed (discontinued now, I think) and a Beddinge sofabed. Then a couple of years ago I go a Leirvik (as a 40th birthday present - I have the best friends!). I slept on the daybed for a few years before switching to using that as my sofa and sleeping on the Beddinge instead. Then switched back. Then back again. I really did get sick of sleeping in a single bed all the time - I like to sprawl when I'm sleeping. The Hemnes seems like it could be a good compromise as you can convert it to a double if you get sick of sleeping on the single all the time.

So, having slept on three different Ikea beds/mattresses over the last eight years I can only recommend taking some time to really go and try out all the mattresses. Like lie on each variation for a couple of minutes, toss and turn, and make sure to try each one at least twice. I've been very happy with each of the ones I've had but spent probably close to an hour choosing. FWIW foam mattresses are, to me at least, the most uncomfortable to sleep on. And I was so excited to try them out after hearing such great things from loads of people. You really need to figure out what's most comfy for you.

Tomorrow is the last day of the sale and I'm going to get the bed. Probably going to get two of their cheap foam mattresses (the 2nd for the trundle) for now and if it winds up being too uncomfortable, I'll exchange one for a little nicer one maybe. I've never bought a mattress and I just can't bring myself to shell out $200+ for one right now in addition to a new bed! Even with the discount, it's still going to be over $400 tomorrow for the bed and two cheap mattresses.

I just suggest laying down on the mattresses in the store and see what you prefer. My daughter has an Ikea sofabed with a good ikea mattress on it for her bed, and it is comfortable.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments. I just bought the bed on my lunch break.  Kind of worried as the boxes were EXTREMELY heavy and I had to have a man help me get it in the car. I elected to get the Haugesund twin mattress after laying on all of them again, as it had pocketed coils and felt better for side sleeping than the firmer mattresses. I also got the cheap foam mattress for the trundle. After reading online reviews, I think I'll get a piece of plywood to lay over the slats, especially when using the trundle as people report frequent breakage of the slats.

For the trundle part, at least, consider one of these instead: http://www.homedepot.com/p/MABIS-Folding-Bed-Board-552-1952-0000/204653247?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cTHD%7cG%7c0%7cG-BASE-PLA-D29B-BathAccessories%7c&gclid=CMLD9InRq9ACFZBWDQodkf4Bwg&gclsrc=aw.ds  Probably pricier than plywood but it's thin enough it won't mess with the closing of the trundle.  The one I have just focuses on maybe 1/2 the length of the bed (ie where your torso is).

Interesting! This might come in handy because the way this Hemnes daybed works, the trundle is even with the regular bed part when pulled out. So this looks like I could use as either a half or full bed brace.

I've been pretty cheap when it comes to furniture because I move so much.

With that said, don't cringe at this suggestion but Walmart has a memory foam mattress that I currently have that's pretty cheap:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-12-Theratouch-Memory-Foam-Mattress-Multiple-Sizes/10086752

I've had this for about 4 years and it's more comfortable than the last Sealy (spelling?) mattress I bought new on sale for like $800 ~6 years ago.  I've also had 2 other people sleep on it and make comments about the comfort of it.

Now, I'm not well versed about the impact memory foam mattresses could have on your health or anything like that...I just know it's comfortable for me and I sleep well on it.

Oooh, neat! Yes, I know there's some concerns about health with memory foam fumes, but it seems most people on here don't notice as much odor as other models (not that not being able to smell it doesn't mean you aren't breathing something harmful). This would only be about $30 more than the one I bought today, so I might have to consider it, especially given the average reviews of Ikea mattresses.

Hey, I also see they have an 8" mattress! That might be better for me as I'll have the spare mattress to tuck under it when not using the trundle.

I just bought a 4' foam mattress for a guest.  I tried it and I will never again spend hundreds of dollars for a regular mattress.  I like firm mattresses and 4' foam is perfect for me.  The fact that I can fold it up and put it away is even better.  Git it a shot.

A couple years ago, I bought a "Sultan" brand "extra firm" mattress at Ikea.  I didn't know it at the time, but sleeping on it caused me to have chest pains (which resulted in me being paranoid about it, and racking up huge bills from a hospital visit to get mysekf checked out.)

I ended up buying a Serta instead, and I feel MUCH MUCH better now.

First of all, don't get so worked up  over what is "mustachian"

Second, my reading skills are bad and I'm not sure if we are talking about mattresses or just the bed

Third, I may be drunk

Fourth, I agree Ikea is not BIFL quality -- you could make your own bed out of pine for a better price and it will last forever

Sixth... hah just kidding Fifth, for a mattress I say get a foam bed -- Costco is decent or try foamorder.com or any similar site.  You will never have to buy another mattress again.

LMAO...at least you're honest. Yeah, I'd prefer a medium to medium-firm mattress, so hopefully I can find a foam mattress that suits me.

Thanks for the tip on this. I just took back the $150 spring mattress I bought at Ikea and will probably try this foam one you posted. Tell me, do you feel it "sleeps hot" compared to a spring mattress? As long as it isn't extreme, I don't think it would bother me too much as I tend to get cold at night anyway, but just wondering.

Do you Costco?  They will take back any mattress you are unhappy with.

Go home, Bob, you're drunk.

Apparently I'm too cheap for Costco...just saw their cheapest twin was right under $300. I think I might take my chances first with the $120 Walmart one.

I think this kind of proves the point of how individual mattresses are because the mattress I had for my daybed was a SULTAN and I thought it was really comfy. Glad you got your chest pains sorted!

Just curious, do you happen to be a side sleeper, like I am? I've heard memory foam mattresses can be rather firm and I'd like something a little softer for side sleeping. How firm do you feel this mattress has been for you?

I got a Sleep Innovations foam mattress from Amazon (free shipping). It had good reviews and was much cheaper than the local stores. Ended up getting one of the more expensive models but I think it was under $500. Took a chance but I'm happy with it, and I prefer to sleep on my side. It took a few days of getting used to but my back (injuries) doesn't hurt nearly as much as when I had my old worn out spring mattress.

I got a generic spring mattress and a 2 or 3 inch egg crate foam topper from Walmart...the combo is super comfy for <150.

Sorry I am JUST seeing this!!

All I can say is it's the perfect comfort level for me; definitely not too firm (I don't like firm mattresses).  I do sleep on my side a lot.

The temperature is not a problem...I get hot and cold extremely easily and I feel this mattress is pretty neutral in that area.
