need help with VA benefits!!
« on: April 21, 2015, 06:47:19 PM »
ok ...so i'm finally starting a real job next month. I'll be working for the local VA hospital. I've spent a good bit of time reviewing the HR benefits packet, but I would love some BTDT advice. I'm planning to max retirement accounts (the VA equivalent of a 401K, which I think is the TSP) and an HSA, if I can find a health plan that offers one. I will have 5% match into my TSP. I also have a required 4.4% pension contribution.  Any suggestions on which fund(s) to go with on the TSP? Any other suggestions? Any other VA benefits to take advantage of? AFter that, Roth for me and DH? TIA!!

The Lifecycle funds are excellent in my opinion. I currently have mine going into the L 2050.

That site will give you some mutual fund equivalants to the TSP funds.

I split mine with
60% in C fund (S&P 500 type)  which is doing amazingly well the past few years
20% in S (small cap)
20% in I (international).

I did some reading and this is what Dave Ramsey recommended for a split. I tried it out and it has been VERY profitable for me.
