Title: Need help figuring out how to buy phone for Republic Wireless launch July 28
Post by: tmoneyearlyretiree on July 24, 2016, 08:44:35 PM
I've been a loyal RW customer since the Moto X1 came out three years ago. I resisted the temptation to switch to Google Fi and feel like I'm being rewarded with the new release of all the new phones. Hopefully have enough people familiar with the service that I could get some good advice. I'm trying to decide between Moto Pure edition, Nexus 6P, Galaxy 7 Edge, or the Moto G4 plus.
If I have to buy it from RW, I'm thinking the Pure bc of the 349 price, decent specs, and SIM card set up from RW. They claim you can bring your own, but I don't know how that is going to work. Can I buy a refurbished Verizon Wireless phone for $500 and swap out the SIM card? Any suggestions on what phone model I should get or how I should buy it would be appreciated. I run a personal finance blog and would maybe like to use my phone for starting a podcast or business purposes too so that might influence your suggestion.

Why not switch to Google Fi?  Which will save you money?  Google Fi has the Nexus 6P, FWIW, if you're wanting a new phone.

Republic Wireless has the better phone plans in my opinion unless someone can make the counterargument. Plus I get a grandfathered plan as a long time customer , which is 40/month for 5gb, 25 for unlimited 3g i think

Plus I already use Google for so much I'd like to support a smaller company so they dont take over the world

Okay, if you've assessed your needs and decided they're best, that's fine.

The sentence
Quote
I resisted the temptation to switch to Google Fi

didn't make it clear on why you resisted switching.

For the states, I prefer FreedomPop's free plan ($0/mo) and for international travel Google Fi (varies based on data usage, but generally runs me around $26/mo).  But of course, mobile data needs vary, and paying more for more data can be worth it (for a long time I used Sprint because I had a good unlimited plan and having that as my home internet saved us money overall, and unlimited data while out was a nice bonus).
