I'm looking for a simple device that can store/play downloaded music and audiobooks. It's a gift for a kid. I'm not looking for anything fancy or phone-like, and no screen is necessary. Just something that stores music that you can plug headphones into, or maybe sync wireless earbuds to. Would like to spend less than $100.
Thanks in advance! I'm totally clueless in this area.

The older sony walkman is cheap, small, light, robust, water resistant, and can store plenty of music/audiobooks in .mp3 format:

I've been using one for listening to music on long bike rides for four years now and have no complaints. Definately picked mine up for under 100$ (canadian).

There are tons of these on Amazon. I just bought a waterproof one for swimming for about $30.

I have never owned one but I've been hearing good things about the SanDisk line of mp3 players for many years - under $50 and they have a bunch of options. A couple of my friends have sworn by them for 10+ years. It does have a small screen so you can choose what to listen to, and they have some fun colors that a kid might like.

Great — thank you both. I’m looking at Amazon and it looks like there are some good choices.
