Tiny house vs. RV
« on: August 20, 2014, 10:55:35 PM »
ok so what is really the difference here.

1. i get tiny houses are easier to build since you build them out of non light weight materials.
2. isnt the tiny house how RV's started back in the day
3. didnt these tiny houses progress into the RVs we see now
4. If you're really going to travel with it why not by an RV of similar size or large that is lighter and better engineered. thru years of experience. than buy a tiny house...

5.  this is a perfect example of history repeating it self...

6 seriously.. we should ditch the PC in favor of the old punch card systems...

7.  sorry rant over but point made

I don't think the tiny houses are really travel worthy like an RV.   yes, they are portable but you don't just drive them around every weekend.

I may be wrong, but  I think one of the big reasons for putting a tiny house on a 'trailer" is to get around some zoning laws.  otherwise you are building a permanent structure with all kinds of extra codes, fees, inspections etc. and even if you have the cash to pay all those extra expenses you'll still get told "no" in some locations.

i think you're greatly misunderstanding the purpose of an RV.  sure for the non mustachian american an RV gets driven a few times a year or maybe "every weekend" as you put it... but as a vehicle for transport they are very easy to live in for months at a time...

and the travel side is what people try to sell about them... they can move locations...

seriously look at history of an RV ... they started out as tiny homes you pulled around ... an RV gets around all of the same zoning issues you speak of... and if it doesnt a mobile wood built house wont either...

you're right, tiny houses get past all of the same zoning laws as RVs.

I'm not a proponent of tiny homes or RVs.  our "hotel on wheels" is a giant used van we bought with 150,000 miles on it.  we pulled out some back seats and blow up an air mattress at night.  No bathroom, double burner propane stove with folding table, and plenty of storage space for our bikes, surfboards, skateboards...

If I had to put my finger on the difference, I think that the tiny home is the "trendy" young person way of being different and choosing an alternative low impact lifestyle that accomplishes some of the same things that an RV does.  But RVs have the stigma of older retired people who are wasteful (I'm not saying it's true).

Well if we're looking for good reasons for tiny houses, one would be that you can design and build it your way, as opposed to RVs that are produced on assembly lines.

Most tiny houses I've seen use natural materials (lots of wood) or reclaimed/recycled stuff. It's about low impact as well as low footprint.

And the physical layout usually contains more clever, custom details that wouldn't make it into an RV because they might not work for everyone (especially older, mostly sedentary retirees).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
