Title: Mustachian way to get rocks/boulders for landscaping yard?
Post by: crimwell on July 15, 2017, 07:14:09 PM
Has anyone else landscaped with big rocks/boulders? I'm not talking about areas of gravel/rocks, but more like large feature rocks big enough for a kid to jump off of.

The rocks I'm talking about would be too big to be loaded by hand or in a regular pickup truck.

I can get big ones delivered from the builder supply place in town for about $150-$500 depending on size. Anyone have a more clever way to do this? Calling a quarry directly? How did you get it delivered?

Definitely not bigger than movable with front loader (although that would really be awesome)
Ideally at least 2 ft by 2 ft. The local supply place has rocks up to about 2.5 ft by 3 ft, which is what I'll probably end up with

Not mustachian I'm itself, but I'm replacing thirsty grass with it so I won't need further water/mowing etc

Rent a big truck for the day, and come take the boulders out of my yard. They're free.

Do you know any farmers, or know someone who does? As Garrison Keillor said in Lake Wobegon Days, "Every spring the earth heaves up a new crop of rocks," and every farmer I know of has a designated spot where they all get piled. They're usually pretty big, too.

Call a ready mix or concrete contractor near you. Hopefully one that owns a gravel pit.

I guess it depends where you live. In central texas limestone is all over, so it is generally cheapish, and generally, they will deliver for a very small fee, sometimes even free if you order enough.
As far as where to get them? The quarry or basically where the stores would get them from. They normally require that you by the ton (not weight but how much they can scoop up with a truck)

Great suggestions, folks, thank you. Not too much agriculture around here, but the farmers that are around probably have to deal with a lot of rocks coming up.

Will definitely call the local concrete place.
