Mustachian vacuum cleaners
« on: May 28, 2013, 10:21:45 AM »
I live in an apartment with hardwood floors that I have covered with several area rugs. Rather than paying carpet cleaners to come clean our rugs, I was hoping to get some recommendations on versatile vacuums that do a good job on rugs in addition to hardwood floors. Any suggestions?

To me, the most mustachian vacuum on the market is the Dyson.  You'll pay more upfront, but we have had ours going on 8 years. It appears to me that every part on the vacuum is replaceable in a modular fashion.  I've replaced the hose, which was about a 5 minute job. Ordered the part on their website. Obviously if you can find a used one you will be better off, but we would normally have gone through 2 or 3 vacuums in that time. And it cleans much better as well.  I think if you keep your rugs regularly vacuumed, and treat spots manually as they occur, you won't need the other cleaning.

Royal (or Electro-Hygiene) used. Like a Kirby but less popular.

It depends on your carpets and habits, but I've found the easiest and cheapest way to clean my area rug to be:

1. Sweep (with a broom) weekly to remove dust and stuff. Takes a little practice.
2. Every couple of months or so, borrow a vacuum from a friend. Vacuums are one of those things that I see no point in owning unless you have pets that shed, because they can be borrowed so easily.
3. Repay your friend by cooking dinner or something. I use herb cuttings and homemade beef jerky and stuff.

My friends and I do the same thing with tools and stuff.

I like the idea of sharing a vacuum cleaner with a friend or neighbor, and would recommend that arrangement first.

Alternatively, I bought a Riccar Sunburst a few years ago and have been very happy with it: http://riccar.com/products/canisters/?prod=Sunburst]http://riccar.com/products/canisters/?prod=Sunburst   We have a small house, mainly wood floors, but a small carpeted area and a few rugs. Given that it's something that I don't use a whole lot, the $200 investment seemed reasonable. The canister style is also really nice because it doesn't take up a lot of space and is easy to move around.

I have a canister style dyson that is very good (don't know the model name, but it's purple and marketed for pet hair control).  I have hardwood and rug combination also, and I like the dyson canister because its really easy to change the attachment from the carpet attachment (spinning brush thing), and the attachment for hardwood/tile.  I've had it 3-ish years with no issues, and seems like it will run for a good long time.  If you could find one used, obviously that would be more mustachian than buying new, but if you can't find used I think it's better to buy something good (even if its more $$$$) if it will legitimately last longer (saving money in the long run, and not being wasteful by buying throwaway machines that end up in a landfill).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
