Title: Mustachian vacation ideas for 5-6 people in the midwest?!
Post by: cupcakes4all on July 09, 2014, 05:42:42 PM
Hi Team.. Does anyone have any suggestions for a mustacian vacation? This is for a group of 5-6 recently graduated adults. We like to hike, run, travel, and see new things. This year we'd like to meet up in the midwest sometime in Oct/Nov. Preferably this area would be near a largish town since we will be flying from all over the US. Please post ideas/suggestions! :)

If you are into bikes the katy trail through Missouri could be cool. Camp at state parks as you go.

I super duper love the north shore in mn. Weather might be dicey by late fall though.

x2! But only if you're looking at early-mid October. Even the best Novembers up there are cold, wet, and grey.

Door county is Wisconsin's version of MN's North Shore. It's smaller and less impressively wooded, but it has all the camping/hiking/lake (Michigan) views and etc., and it usually has better weather in Oct/Nov.

Ooor, if you want more woodland, the Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin are a delight.

As a rule of thumb, don't come to the upper Midwest in November. It's always cold and grey, often snowy, but rarely snowy enough for snow sports yet.

I don't know if this counts as Midwest, but northern Arkansas is beautiful for outdoor activities and AR has a killer state park system. Eureka Springs is a fun town to visit.

Minneapolis is a great city to visit if you like outdoors-y activities.  Frequently rated #1 in the U.S. for parks and for cycling.  Really good music, theater, and craft beer scenes as well.  The north shore is great too, as others have mentioned, and about 2-3 hours away depending on where you go.  October is my favorite time in the Twin Cities, but November will be cold.

Denver is a nice city too and could fit the bill, although it's not really in the midwest. I've also heard great things about KC, although I haven't been.

Good luck!

Be aware of possible overexposure of hipsters and Target HQ employees.

Seriously though, good food and good times can definitely had in either the Twin Cities (if you're looking for urban fun) or the north shore (outdoorsy fun).

I am not sure where exactly you are thinking.  A couple friends of mine recently biked the Katy trail to Herman, MO and then did a wine tour.  They had a wonderful time.  We are going on a float trip in Southern, MO with about 6 people.  The cost is about $20 a person for canoes and camping is free.  We will just have some gas (40-50 mpg car), booze and food to cook at the campsite.

I know some great places (upstate WI, and the Warren Dunes in Michigan) for summer.
The time of the year can be iffy for upper midwest so suggest exploring the lower midwest area.
