Mustachian vacation cabin in Colorado?
« on: May 16, 2013, 10:25:04 AM »
We're beginning Mustaschians, but my wife and I enjoy taking our annual vacation to Colorado to the mountains.  We haven't been for a couple of years, so we want to give it a shot this summer.  At any rate, we always stay in the Estes Park area, and it's definitely not "off-peak."   So we're open to looking to other places in order to find a better deal.  The cabin we would likely rent in EP is $209 a night, definitely not Mustaschian.  We are looking to go the day after Labor Day (so offpeak that way), but realize that if we could get away from Estes Park, we could probably save some money.  However, having gone there for so many years as antimustaschians, we don't have a clue where to go.

We're open to just about any location in CO, provided it's a short drive to hiking. For the cabin itself, we'd like either a king or two twin beds (I'm a big guy, but starting to get smaller), plus at least a stove and fridge for cooking our meals.  A bbq grill would be nice too.  Don't need hot tub, playgrounds, swimming pools or any of that.

Any Coloradoan Mustachians or other Mustaschians that travel there have recommendations?

Not a Colorado native, but in addition to multiple family reunions in the Estes Park area, we stayed at a place between Gunnison and Almont that was neat.  Lots of good fishing, hiking etc and Gunnison and Almont had lots of neat little shops and such to explore.  Very nice area, and cheaper than the EP area.

We did a day trip to the Black Canyon National Part that was cool too.

Colorado resident here. My go-to for cheapish mountain rental is VRBO (vacation rental by owner). If it's just the two of you, you can easily find a 1 bedroom or studio for cheaper than $209 a night. Estes Park is on the expensive side, since it's a big tourist destination. I would look into these area, which are also really close to great hiking:
-Lyons
-Dillon
-Silverthorne
-Leadville

hope this helps!

There are millions of acres of national forest, who knows how much in state and national parks, and oodles of quite nice campgrounds.  Buy a tent.

Alternatively, Golden Gate State Park (gorgeous if you have not been there) rents yurts and even has a quite large large house for rent.

Thank you everyone!  I will check these out.  We may do something even more mustachian and choose not to go this summer, but will keep these in mind for future trips.

Agreed.  I've found great tent camping in Colorado in the summer.

You can rent that house?  I drive by it every day and I never knew that LOL!

to the OP, you need to let us know how important the shops and restaurants are to you.   Since you go to Estes, that makes me think you probably enjoy that.

If you want funky mountain town, you could try Nederland, which is only 20 minutes from Boulder.

Try Airbnb.com to find cheaper places to stay.

Also, check out ski areas.  They have lots of lodging and it can be fairly economical in the summer.  I love Breckenridge and Crested Butte.  Oh, and I edited to add Snowmass, which is near Aspen.  It's incredible there and not that expensive.  Soooo much to do in that area and Aspen is fun too.

The shops and restaurants are NOT important.  We go to Estes because of habit mainly, and that's what my parents did. The proximity to RMNP as well. I don't think we shopped other than Safeway the last time there and we ate all of our meals in the cabin (except what we packed on our hikes).  We did drive through Nederland on our way to Denver (for a conference) but I remember very little about it.

Thanks for all of the great ideas!

Look into staying at the Elkhorn Lodge, just on the edge of Estes Park.  An easy walk to the main drag.  They even have a campfire and provide beer
