Mustachian trip to South Beach?
« on: February 04, 2014, 03:15:18 PM »
Any ideas on ways to travel cheap to Miami Beach?

I may be planning a trip there for this July (it's also possible I'd like to plan a trip before then, but for now, I'll focus on just the one trip in July).

It will be three of us for four nights and the hotel part is looking to be around $230 per person.  *Nonstop* flights right now for that date are $440.  (1 stops are $292 and going >>>fast>>>....last year I paid $350 for a nonstop from CHI to MIA).

I'm estimating $75/daily for spending while there.  So that's a grand total of just under $1100, altogether.  I'd like to make the trip closer to say....$750 max altogether.  Does this seem reasonable?  How much would you budget for such a trip?  I'm mostly going to be lounging on the beach and eating, 1 touristy destination, 1 night in a club, and 1 massage at a spa while there.

I forgot to add, it'll be four of us.

Also...anyone here cut down on their travel as a result of becoming more Mustachian?  I started off the New Year saying I wouldn't travel this year.  But I suffer from depression and am living in a cold, dark city in the midst of a hard winter.  I can't imagine not going someone nice once this year...I feel like I literally have nothing to look forward to in life, so having this trip to plan means a lot to me.  I love love LOVE the ocean....

Is that $230 total or $230 per night?  I've stayed at this hostel and it seemed nice, very social http://www.sobe-hostel.com/.  Or you could check out airbnb.  That might get you a place with use of the kitchen which would help cut down on costs.

Personally, I love lounging on the beach.  And I wouldn't want to waste time doing touristy stuff or getting a massage.  Sure, have a touristy thing planned but only in case of bad weather.  Get a massage back home when you're feeling crappy and you can get a groupon or something.  If you're packing snacks from the grocery store, lounging on the beach all day should be a lot cheaper than $75 a day.  Pregame for the night at the club.

Also, are you sure it has to be Miami?  Lot of beach on the east coast.  Maybe airfare is cheap enough to make a difference, not sure.

Personally, I find the value of beach vacations in the winter to be a better return on investment.  Screw your family and go to Mexico during Christmas.

It's $230 total.  I went to SoBe last summer and fell in love with the water. I may be open to other cities...especially if the airfare is cheaper from Chicago!

Going in the winter would be nice, but it's high season and even more $$$$.  I have also looked at vrbo....if we go that route we could save maybe $60-$70 on the hotel so good call.....

I live close by. South Beach hotels are overpriced. You might be better off staying in North Beach (still part of Miami Beach), which is around 50-88 St. Don't confuse this with North Miami Beach, which is a different city. Or, you can go a little further north on A1A to the Aventura or Sunny Isles area. You might get cheaper accomodations.

There is a bus route that goes along A1A from Aventura to South Beach to downtown Miami. Take the 120 or S routes. You can be in South Beach in 20 minutes.

Everyone in Columbus is feeling that way too. By the time it's July and time to take your trip it'll be sunny where you are too. Even if vacation is a good remedy, couldn't you just look forward to the nice weather for free where you are? It'll get there before July!

I am your expert! I go to South Beach about 6 times per year.

First, airfare. Have you priced out fares into Ft. Lauderdale? It's almost always cheaper.

Another thing to keep in mind. A cab from the Miami airport to South Beach will run you about $40 after tip, each way. There are shuttles (GO AIRPORT SHUTTLE) that take you from Ft. Lauderdale's airport to Miami Beach. For solo travelers, it's about half-price. You should ask about a group rate if you are traveling with others.

As for hotels, I have had luck with sites like Hotwire and Priceline, but be very specific about your location.  If you want to be in South Beach, look at a map before booking on those sites.  You don't want to end up "out of the way" if that's important to you.  Also, I've had a lot of friends who had good luck with AirBNB. Miami has a lot of empty condos that need to be filled.  Plus, your trip is the off-season down there. You can get a good rate.  I have stayed in July for about $150 at The Mondrian, one of the nicest hotels. I got that on Priceline.

As for other activities, lay on the beach rather than buying chairs and an umbrella.  Buy your sunscreen before you go.  If you drink, buy a bottle of booze and drink 1 or 2 in your hotel room before you go out for the night.  Be careful about "specials" at restaurants.  Many are overpriced.  Dine on Lincoln Road, not Ocean Drive.

Enjoy your trip. Miami Beach is always a blast!
