AXA 401k - should I continue to contribute?
« on: June 20, 2016, 06:57:31 AM »
I have a 401k at work with AXA and I’m wondering if it is worth continuing to contributing to it given the fees and the fact I have no employer match?

Currently have about $200,000 in a EQ/Intermediate Government Bond fund with fees of 0.72% (this is one of the cheapest funds on offer and I’m all bonds to minimize taxes).

Married and joint gross income is about $300,000 and like in Illinois.

So are the tax benefits worth continuing to contribute or am I better off saving in my vanguard account (muni bonds or total bond market)?
I have no intention of moving jobs so if there any way if I stop contributing to the 401k I can roll it over to my Vanguard IRA while I am working there or am I stuck with it in AXA until I leave my current employer?

Figure out how much the 401k is saving you in taxes. Is the loss of that tax benefit better than the fees?

Ask if you can do a rollover to an IRA while still employed there--some places allow this.

Better yet, ask for better investment options, or a new plan provider. If you're unhappy, you are probably not the only one. Send whoever makes the decisions this Last Week Tonight clip: http://time.com/4365746/john-oliver-retirement-last-week-tonight/
