Moving to Nebraska, jacket/clothes recommendations?
« on: January 04, 2021, 12:22:37 AM »
Hoping to find something BIFL (buy it for life) and specific brand/products. I've got waterproof work boots already, which I think should be fine. I'm moving from California and have never experienced truly cold weather, snow, or anything extreme. Am thinking of this jacket (Carhartt Insulated Shoreline) https://workboots.com/carhartt-insulated-shoreline-jacket-black?hp=y#/28447/2539,653/1. Am I on the right track here?

I grew up in Nebraska.

Personally, that jacket looks thin to me, though the claim is that it will be warm enough for all conditions. Layers are your friend so I'd be sure to have thermal underwear and a few additional tops that can be added or removed.

Keep in mind that in NE you don't have to have extended exposure to the elements unless it's on purpose for recreation. In everyday life, you get into your vehicle in your garage, drive to your destination, and go inside quickly.

+1

The level of winter weather gear you need for midwestern states depends a lot on your job. If you'll be working inside, you really only need enough insulation to walk from building 1 to your car and from your car to building 2. If you'll be working outside (or like outdoor winter activities like hunting), you need much more substantial winter weather gear.

My guess is that the coat you posted would be fine for car->building building->car transits, but probably wouldn't be enough for spending hours outdoors in the depth of winter.

Don't forget gloves/hat as well.

Any red jacket with a prominent N would be good.

hahahahah - thats awesome

in all seriousness, Nebraska gets some extremes on both ends, 100+ and humid in summer and freezing cold with snow, wind and ice in the winter

but unless you are working outside, any jacket/ regular pants will work fine

Will you find yourself in a situation where you need to clear snow (driveways, sidewalks)?  If so, gloves, ear muffs, and a face covering (ski mask) will be much more important than the coat. Physical activity will keep your core warm, but frostbite will go for those fingers, your ears will start to ache, and there's nothing like being pelted in the face with a fine mist of blowing snow and having it melt, then flash-freeze to your skin.

If I were you, I would wait until you get there to purchase anything. You must have a few things like fleeces, windbreakers, etc. Layer those for the trip, and then once you're there during a couple days of cold weather, go to a store and pick some stuff out. After Christmas you should be able to get some deals.

It seems okay for a coat, but I agree that that’s the least of it. Will you be outside a lot? Even if you aren’t, you will be *cold* the first you and you should be prepared to layer. Socks, hat, gloves - those are critical.

Might go this route to fit in at my new job heh.

As for environment, it's warehouse work so it's inside and I'll be moving quite a bit. I've got a hi viz refrigeration work coat so maybe I'll get by this year in my work coat and gauge what I need next year.

Got the kids their coats. Many people mention long underwear, curious if PJs will work haha. We've got plenty and it's kind of fun to wear already for them. Maybe a temporary solution, we don't have much selection (or need) for this kind of stuff here.

Seriously once football season rolls around again you will be positively astounded at how much red-and-white Husker attire everyone wears on football Saturdays. Sure there are Nebraskans who don't follow / aren't interested in college ball, but they keep a pretty low profile.

And post-corona, you should for sure attend a game at Memorial Stadium, including tailgating beforehand. It's an experience. Third biggest population center in the state on game days! :)

One of the most neglected items for cold weather that is very helpful is the scarf.  There are very soft high tech fleece ones now that are wonderful.  You can wear it the obvious way around you neck to seal drafts or in windy conditions wrap it around your face, over your ears, etc.  A good scarf is an enormous help!

I've lived on a farm in Iowa for 40 years. My husband is outside all the live long day. Here's a link to what he wears when he moves snow.

Layers. Neck, head and face coverings are key!

I grew up in California. Lived for a year in Munich, Germany and recently moved to Idaho.

First, to dispel something I've heard from those unacquainted with real cold: Heavy doesn't necessarily mean warm. On the contrary, heavy can mean the opposite since it may conduct heat away from your body. Insulation is mostly about trapping pockets of warm air, thus warm clothing often feels very lightweight.

Down insulation is king in sub-freezing temps due to its excellent insulation-to-weight ratio, yet mostly loses its insulating properties when wet so don't rely on it in rain/sleet. Whereas wool retains about 80% of its warmth when wet. Some of the new synthetic insulation performs close to down yet still performs reasonably well when wet.

Keeping warm in California usually comes down to "do I need a jacket today?" But in a truly cold climate you need to think about your entire wardrobe. Nor is there such thing as a single jacket for all winter conditions. Temperature, wind, activity, length of exposure: These are the factors you need to consider when preparing for the day.

Think in terms of layers. You want a first layer of tighter thin insulation against your skin to wick moisture away. After that, a middle layer of moderate breathable insulation. Finally, an outer layer of windblock (insulation optional, depending on conditions), preferably one that is breathable if you can afford it. These layers work together as a complete system to keep you warm and dry, with each layer providing insulation, but also air is trapped between the layers so the net effect is greater than the sum of the parts.

A basic setup for extended exposure would be something like: long underwear (I'm partial to merino wool), synthetic fleece/jacket/vest or wool shirt or down jacket, outer shell to shed wind/snow, gloves, wool socks, insulated boots, scarf/neck gaiter, warm hat. A balaclava is a good option for long periods outside.

The outer windblocking layers should have ways to close up gaps to avoid letting wind in and warm out. Look for jackets with a waist drawstring and cuffs that are snug (velcro or some type of elastic).

Layering makes your winter wardrobe a lot more versatile. On very cold/windy days and/or days during low activity, you'll wear all 3 layers and may even opt for more middle insulation layers (e.g. wool shirt combined with vest). For moderate activity on cold days without wind you may find it's better to remove the outermost layer. Under heavy exertion without wind it may be best to just have the wicking layer. Or, under heaving exertion with wind skip the middle insulation layer. Everyone is different, some run hotter or colder, so you'll need to experiment to find what works for you. Until you get a good sense of what works for you it's best to take along more than you think you'll need and remove layers as needed.

One final note: Cotton is fine for casual wear with short periods of exposure going between the car and the house and what not. But it's terrible for extreme conditions and is dangerous if it gets wet. Stick to synthetic and wool, or perhaps a down jacket when well below freezing.

This may seem overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it it's not a big deal.

ETA: Just read upthread that you're going to be working inside in a wearhouse. If you're inside then it mostly doesn't matter, wear whatever you want, and add a sweater if you get chilly. What I wrote above applies to extended periods outside.

Some specific brand/product recommendations*:

Eddie Bauer makes quality products that are reasonably priced. And they are on sale right now. Their Downlight Jacket is a great general purpose insulation layer. Their synthetic insulated trench would be a good standalone outer layer in a wintery mix of rain/snow and temps not too much below freezing.

Columbia and REI both carry good uninsulated waterproof/windproof jackets and pants. The Carhartt jacket above also looks like a fine outer layer.

Minus33 has carries great merino wool long underwear, neck gaiters, bennies, and balaclavas.

*I'm tall so these are biased towards companies that carry my size. I'm sure there are many other good options out there for normal sizes.

Cotton PJs for the kids is just fine! Don't get hepped up on "I must get this and that specific item in order to survive!" Build your family's winter wardrobes as you go. Check second hand, Goodwill, and eBay as you figure out what works best for YOU!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
