Moving to Fort Worth from NOVA - where to live?
« on: July 20, 2014, 08:29:45 PM »
Hi! I've been looking online at apartments all day and have no idea which option is best? I want affordable but safe, as I'm a 31 year old who has to take her dog out at all hours. I'll be working downtown at 801 Cherry. I'm torn between Arlington (seems affordable but I'm worried about neighborhoods), Mansfield, and right by my office. The close to the office choice is over $1100 and I was hoping to be under $1000 (would rather it be lower but living in DC has made me think 1k is a bargain) for a one bedroom with a washer/dryer or a very good laundry option very close. I have a fuel efficient car but don't want to drive too far. I'm open to public transportation if it's decent! I'd love to find a place that's walkable and quaint, but I know this is no Austin or Boulder. If any Mustachians have tips, I'd love to hear them!

And I posted where I was moving from (Northern VA) just in case some other poor person has to rent a moving truck to move the last week of August to also move to Fort Worth and wants to split it. I know, it's a long shot, but I figured this community is large and I could always get lucky!

Thanks a bunch!

I don't live in Ft. Worth so I am totally guessing but the "museum area" of Ft. Worth looks lovely to me and seems safe. I've been there a half dozen times and find it very attractive.  I hope some one who lives nearby can give you concrete feedback as it might also be the priciest part of town.  I have a cousin who lives in Arlington and loves it but I'd be leery of living in Arlington and working in Ft. Worth because of the commute.

Good luck!

Thanks, yeah I've driven through there on the way on long road trips and only made the mistake of getting stuck in rush hour once!

I'll check out the museum area!

I don't live in Ft. Worth now, but I grew up there, and my dad still lives there, so I go back a fair amount.

I'd say, as far as ambiance, what you're looking for is likely in the Cultural District or Sundance Square, both very chill and very walkable areas in downtown Ft. Worth, near where you work. (The museum area is the "Cultural District," and Sundance Square isn't far and has more amenities, like grocery stores.)

However, as you've already noticed, both of those areas are the most expensive parts of Ft. Worth. It might be worth it to you, though, because you could bike into work easily from the Cultural District and walk from Sundance Square, and still feel like you could go out at night and not be as isolated as you might be in Arlington or Mansfield.

Having said that, Arlington is generally a pretty nice town, no need to be worried about neighborhoods. (As is Mansfield, but I didn't see you express the same reservations.) Both will be much more inexpensive than Ft. Worth, but (as has been noted) you'll have to contend with a commute. If it's possible, going to work at slightly "off" hours (i.e., coming in at 6:30 or 7am and getting out early) can help with that. And the good news is that your office building is close to public transportation.

The other "negative" of Arlington/Mansfield is that people tend to be more settled in those areas. That is, people who live there tend to have lived there for most of their lives. And there's a very high proportion of families in those places. You don't mention a family, just a dog, and so for singles who might be a bit newer (and possibly more open to making new friendships?), the downtown area could be better in that regard.

Let me know if you have other questions. Hope that helps!

Oh, and if you're looking out as far as Mansfield, another nice-ish area is Hurst-Euless-Bedford. It's partway between the airport and downtown Ft. Worth, and is full of quiet neighborhoods of middle class families. Personally, I wouldn't want to live as far out as Mansfield or H-E-B, but if you're willing to do that drive, that's another place to consider.

And if you're seriously looking at Arlington, let me recommend the area near the Eastchase shopping center. It's on the Ft. Worth side of Arlington and so you'll have a shorter commute, and it's a nice area.

Sorry to keep bombarding you with posts...Keep thinking of more!

Arlington Heights is another cute area, full of bungalows and Craftsman-style homes, that would be biking distance to your work. Things are likely a little cheaper there than in Sundance Square and the Cultural District.

Long time Ft worth resident here.  Most stuff downtown will be a bit more expensive.  I know one that is 900/month but they have a no dog policy.  You should check out 'the depot' apartments or 'hillside apartments'-both are on the edge of downtown but are pretty safe ( I think hillside is based on income as well).  The museum district is nice, but can be pricey.  Check out the TCU area, lots of rental properties there and it is a nice area.  I'm not very detail oriented, but if you have questions I can probably answer them!

I've lived just west of downtown (Arlington Heights area) for 25 years and really like it.  I'll second the TCU-area suggestion.  You might also look a little bit further west of downtown - Ridglea area.  I haven't actually been in these apartments, but they look nice from the outside.

These are just a couple of blocks off the Camp Bowie bus route which goes through the museum and cultural district and into downtown.
As for walkable and quaint - the Near Southside area has all sorts of "happening" eateries and interesting things to do, although I suspect it's pretty pricey as well.
