Moving to Florida and Will Need Health Insurance
« on: May 11, 2016, 01:33:53 PM »
Greetings Mustachians,
We'll be moving to Florida in the fall, so we'll be needing a health insurance plan.  Can anyone steer me to some helpful sites to get insurance quotes?  Thanks,
Ed

Previous response was INCORRECT!

Florida has it's own healthcare marketplace found on:  http://myfloridachoices.org/[/b]]http://myfloridachoices.org/

No, this is incorrect! Florida is on the federal Marketplace and does not have its own. Healthcare.gov is the correct place to go. Specifically you can go here to see what the 2016 options are for your info

Interesting that there are different plans on each site.  Blue Cross is only available on healthcare.gov.  Humana is only on the other site.

Appears to me that myfloridachoices.org is similar to ehealthinsurance.com - a private entity selling insurance.

So, if you think you'll qualify for a subsidy, go with healthcare.gov.

From myfloridachoices.org:

No, Florida’s Marketplace is not the same as Healthcare.gov. The federally facilitated exchange located at Healthcare.gov can provide subsidies to a small percentage of Floridians who qualify based on their income. Most Florida residents are not eligible for the financial assistance offered by Healthcare.gov but are still required to have health insurance. We can help Floridians compare their public and private insurance exchange options.

Looks like it's actually owned by eHealth and Ceridian.  They have a state contract that predates the ACA; it appears to have been originally aimed at small businesses for their employees.

What insurance do you currently have?  Is it portable?

Ah - should have read more on the "About Us" tab.  Overshadowed by Obamacare.  Authorized in 2010, launched in March 2014 - sounds about right - the procurement process here is absurd, and nobody seems to understand that when you "buy" software that doesn't exist, you get all of the headaches of "building" it (or at least the time-frame) with additional problems due to contract management.  Suppose this could have been the official exchange for Florida, but wasn't ready in time, so jump on the Federal bandwagon.  Of course, that wasn't the narrative at the time.

Anyway, larger point stands - if you are subsidy / tax-credit eligible, healthcare.gov is likely your best option.  If you're not, then lots of options are out there.  Way more HSA-eligible plans available on other sites.

My husband and I are moving from Ohio to Florida in July! We plan to go through the marketplace first. If you do not qualify for any or a small subsidy then I would just start getting quotes from any and all carriers. We used anthem before, when self employed and they were quite reasonable at the time.

I think I can get Cobra coverage, but I'm sure it's out of my price range.  I pay $235 a month for my HDHP with a $7,000 deductible.  My school district kicks in another $945 to the plan.  In Cobra coverage I'm certain that I'd be on the hook for both parts of the contribution for a total of $1,170 a month or $14,040 a year...yikes!

A few days ago I started an application at healthcare.gov   We'll see what they do for us.  Thanks to all for the links and input.  Ed
