State Farm or USAA?
« on: June 10, 2016, 11:39:17 AM »
For my auto insurance...USAA appears to be about $15 a month cheaper for the same coverage.  Are there any other considerations I should review before moving my policies from State Farm?

I'm not the person to ask about the finer details of auto insurance coverage, but we've had USAA for years and they have made everything so easy when we've had accidents.  I'd recommend them to anyone.

I had USAA car insurance for years (through my wife's family). Then I decided to shop around. Progressive was $400 a year cheaper with the same coverage. I'd shop GEICO, Progressive for a quote if I were you.

All the major companies with deep enough pockets to advertise on TV fall into the "reasonably reputable" category of carriers. Auto insurance is a highly regulated, highly commoditized market.

Get quotes from the 10 largest companies that operate in your area, throw in a couple well regarded local firms to your analysis, and pick the cheapest.

Same, except I went with GEICO.

I had USAA for years, but we switched to State Farm when USAA decided to increase the premium on our rental property by $1500 per year. I've been perfectly happy with both companies.

I switch companies for auto every year or so.  They give you a teaser rate as a new customer, even if you were a previous customer...you have to be a previous customer for a year or more though.  I've been bouncing between GEICO and Progressive for 4 years now.  Once my current carrier bumps my premiums, I switch to the other and it's always at a cheaper rare for the exact same coverage.  This year I switch back to progressive from GEICO because GEICO bumped my premiums $50 for 6 months.  Went with Progressive for $60 cheaper than Geicos renewal quote.

I just dropped our premiums by about $700 a year by switching from State Farm to Geico.

I did this too, though I found that if I removed collision/comprehensive that USAA was still very competitive with GEICO/Progressive.

Probably will change up things though since we're getting homeowners insurance and expect that we can bundle them for cheaper.

We've currently got State Farm for the house and to get a discount we had to add at least one car, the rest we've got with Progressive (which I love). Unfortunately, State Farm has managed to screw up just about everything they touch, from getting rates incorrect, to accidentally cancelling my wife's car insurance (the only car we have a note on and not a good thing if you have to find out your uninsured via the credit union!) Being she works there we got it rectified without having to pay some exorbitant mandatory insurance fee. Then after spending three hours with the SF rep at his office setting all this up, when the house renewal came in the mail, none of the improvements or options had been added. Still more phone calls and confusion, and more months lost.

I've got more to add, but not a lot positive ; )

I've never had to make a claim on any USAA-insured stuff, but what I've heard (and what the thread anecdotally supports) is that USAA is always at or near the top of insurers when it comes to them being generally pleasant/civil to work with.

If they're the same or even close to the same price, I'd go for USAA. So pleasant and easy to deal with! We had a car damaged during shipping, which didn't turn out to be covered, but they were still lovely and super-easy to deal with. Their roadside assistance is also amazing -- they've been faster, better and easier to deal with than AAA at a fraction of the price.

I'm not sure how much I'd be willing to pay for that excellent customer service, (probably more than $100 per year but less than $400?) but if they're in the same ballpark, USAA all the way.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
